My lad recently went to Holland on tour with Cardiff in May, part of which was training in Vitesse Arnhem FC facilities with their coaches. They also went to see them play and reach the Europa League in a play off game at their stadium.

When he arrived home, he produced a scarf that the Vitesse 1st team coaches had presented the squad with. It made the hairs on my arms stand up on end. The front has a picture of the Pegasus bridge on with Vitesse Arnhem on and on the reverse written in gold is 'Lest We Forget'. It's at the start of the video on the first link below.

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of The Battle Of Arnhem and the heroes of the Para's who fought to save their city, the club changed their away strip colours to the Para's claret and blue. Banners and flags were also created and veterans invited over to watch games in their honour. What an incredible gesture of respect, appreciation and gratitude from the people of Arnhem & their fine football club (of which I've now adopted for this very reason).

We absolutely should be doing in this country in honour and recognition of our armed forces.

Lest We Forget :ayatollah: :bluebird: :ayatollah:

If anyone's looking for a slightly different holiday, a trip to Ypres in Belgium to the mennin gate and ww1 battlefield tours is a really good trip. To see the thousands upon thousands of names of the deceased that they never found or identified written on the walls of the mennin gate is a very powerful experience. They play the last post there EVERY Night of the year. The tour guide tells you the most amazing stories for eg. Soldiers sacrificing themselves by lying on the barrel of a maxim machine gun to protect it from incoming fire because it was the only thing holding the Germans off. I learnt a lot from that trip, not just about the war it's self but about human nature and of course gratitude for the life I live.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
