" Tie up defender Ben Turner on new deal "

While the future of Ben Turner is in limbo as his current contract approaches the final 12 months.

By Scott Johnson

With experience of promotion and the Premier League, he is sure to be in demand if Cardiff stall on offering him a new deal.

Each of the above players I’ve named are attractive options and some are clearly far more likely or realistic than others.

If Cardiff have designs on an influx in quality without breaking the bank, targeting players with dwindling contracts would not be a bad place to start.

The smartest possible approach would be to try and secure a loan deal and place themselves in the strongest possible position when their deals eventually expire, but that sort of package is pretty rare.

However, the calibre of these players demonstrates once again that there is value to be found in the market, if you’re looking in the right places.

He's had his good times with us but he's quite prone to injury and is one of the worst distributors from the back. Not bad as back up but I wouldn't want him near the starting line up.

Id keep him and make him captain he loves Cardiff. :thumbright:

You obviously didn't rate Don Murray, Joe Dwyer or, latterly, Kevin McNaughton either. They were 3 of our greatest ever defenders who's passing ability was not the best

His job is to defend which he does very well. Top Championship defender at least imo.

One of our heroes. We gotta keep him. Would be captain for me if it were not for Gunnar, who is the obvious choice.

Agree with you, Turner and Gunnar would be my choice for captain. Not having a go at Marshall but do not like goalies being captains as they appear too far from the action (and referee).

Shocking player... Only good travelling back towards his own goal flat out to make a crunching tackle,

Defensive awareness is poor, positioning poor, distribution non existent.. Too many injuries...

Shouldn't be in the side let alone captain..

What a load of baloney.

he's an absolute rock at the back. Wins everything in the air, covers ground quick for a big guy, bullies attackers and a good leader. Just his distribution let's him down.

Hardly... His positioning in and around the box is dreadful.... Look back and you'll see., doesn't pick up his man enough.... Gets caught in between countless times.. He's also like a rabbit in the headlights when on the ball... God knows how many jubaraj signs we have replaced with his cross field smashes to no where..

He's an awful defender. A

I don't think a player who came in for so much criticism last season (Gunnarsson) should be an automatic choice, hence why I don't think Gunnarsson should be captain.

I totally agree. Half the time or more his 'great chase with the whole hearted tackle' is due to Big Ben being completely out of position and losing his man. Complemented by his dreadful passing accuracy, he's like the opposition having an extra man.

Top Championship defenders are the ones that can make the step up to the Premier League. Top Championship defenders can pass the ball out comfortably from the back ... that's why they're considered "top Championship defenders". Turner is an average Championship defender who often wears his heart on his sleeve but undoes any good work by constant sloppy passing and aimless hoofing.

Have you met the type of fan who would criticise Gunnarsson? I don't think that is of any consequence to be honest. And by the way how would you feel and perform having to play with Whittingham week in week out? I'd chuck in the towel myself. Gunnar is a rock and we should be so grateful he plays for us and not the opposition.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that? I think criticism of a player whose passing is often poor and who gives away too many needless freekicks IS of consequence. Oh, surely you're not having a dig at Peter Whittingham are you? ... many on this m/b would say he's the best player at the club (certainly not me though).

Gunnarsson will huff & puff without ever managing to blow the house down - limited player.

Every single member of the squad's passing is often poor and I've seen at least as many needless freekicks given away by many other players during the season, particularly his sidekick. On the other hand, I've also seen some sublime passes from Gunnar, intelligent use of space, gritty defensive work and great goals. I think to single him out is unfair, as I said particularly when he's usually playing under a handicap. However, his tenacity, determination, support play and experience would be hugely missed if he were out of the team for any length of time. These leadership qualities make him a clear candidate for captain in my opinion. Nevertheless, I am probably unlikely to sway your opinion and this thread is about Ben Turner who, I believe, is an asset for us.

Totally agree with you Huw he's shocking, his defensive inadequacies have cost us many times! Further point is that he was aiming for the New Law sign but just keeps hitting the Jubaraj sign!! :sladeout:

Going by what they spent in Vegas he better find a good contract

Re: " Ben Turner "

I find it annoying that people criticise Turner because he can't pick out a pass when we have a whole midfield who similarly struggle. How many assists did the likes of Gunnar and Noone manage last season? Turner is one of the best defenders that we have, and is the best foil by far for Manga. Should be captain and should have his contract renewed now.

Re: " Ben Turner "

Thu Jun 25, 2015 7:02 pm

Glad some of u on here don't pick the team!

Turner our top defender?? :o Gunnarsson captain?? Come on lads turner is really poor and an average champ defender at best! Gunnarsson had an awful season in the middle where we were dominated week after week by average joes!! Running around a consistently fouling or falling over!!

Either has to be sold or sign a new contract. We already have to many CB's
