" Owning a football Club/Glad I was put off "

A few years ago I nearly got involved with Merthyr Tydfil Football Club and I had arranged for another person to go int o partnership with me.

The club was in dire straights at the time, but thankfully since Merthyr have had 3 promotions and £200,000 given to them from the Council,of course with conditions.

I received a phone call from Sam Hammam who rang to advise me.

Sams first words were," Are you going to love it like your own child? "

" Have you got 24/7 to give it? "

" Will you be able to take the flack if things go wrong? "

I said, I really like Merthyr and enjoyed going up there etc

Sam said " thats not the answers "

Sam then said "the majority of fans only care about how well the team is doing and how much to go in "
" You could be doing fantastic one season and mediocre the next and some will immediately turn on you. " Could you handle that? "

I then met the Merthyr trust who said they wanted equal say on the board, yet were not prepared to put equal money in to the club like my partner and myself.

For weeks I thought long and hard about everything Sam had said and I am now glad I never got involved as lets be honest an owner can never win with the fans.
One minute your a hero, the next public enemy no 1.

I am posting this as when I think back over the years, the Chairmen that I respected Bob Crogan,Tony Clemo,Steve Borley, Sam Hamman and even Peter Ridsdale for a while took loads of stick and some of them really did care for Cardiff City. :thumbright: :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

Funny to think you could be owning a team pushing for the Football league Annis.

Would have been a ride for sure.

Don't we demand a day at our club when Tan puts in the money and holds all the risk?

Neil, the difference with Tan is he stripped our club of its identity and has made our debt the highest ever in our history.

He has barely put a foot wrong as Chairman, honestly. But you're right, he is one of the exceptions to the rule I guess.

I defy anyone to find a picture of someone who looks more smug and smarmy!

I said in another thread that Richard Osman from Pointless said the only way to make a small fortune from a football club is to start with a big fortune. They are money pits and you should stay well clear unless you are a billionaire. Becoming a director is different but owning a club is a financial death wish.

Principle is the same mate. I agree you were wise to dip out though. I'm sure if Tan could go back in time he would not take us over again. f**k knows where we would be now. Possibly below Merthyr.

Not really Neil, I would never of stripped Merthyr of their identity, for me you are virtually killing the club from day one.
But I'm glad I never got involved, even though I still want them to do well :thumbright:

I don't think you would have mate. Principle as in they wanted a say as we do with our club without putting in the money or risk you would have or Tan does.

Isn't the owner of Newport a guy who won the lottery?

It was quiet possibly the worst period of my term as Councillor because they basically wanted to take full control of our money and you I was offered a £250,000 bribe to get something through Council by the same dodgy individual

Not a f*cking chance, I told the Council who then told the old bill. A month later they smashed into my house because they thought that I did have something to do with it because I refused to wear a wire, ended up in special court the following day and found not guilty!!!

All that for telling the truth to the cunts, they can go and f**k themselves in the future

annis, i have to disagree with you here, i think owning a football club, history plays a big part, let me explain, say you took over a club like merthyr a few years ago, a team with no real history of big time success ect, or promotions. if you were honest with fans, like "we are losing money, we need to sell players and cut the budget to keep going, however we are hopefull to build success the right way" i think the fans like look at you and say okay, we agree with this. however you said to them fans, we are going to get promotion we will be huge, we will be big, and then you cut the budget and sell players then they will turn.

also if you take a team with a history of a bit of success, like WBA had when they where yo-yo team, and then you sold off players ect and then didnt achieve promotion then i believe the fans would turn

but lets be honest, aslong as your honest with fans, you dont lie, you show you are trying to do right for a team then you will be a okay owner.
