Cardiff City boss Russell Slade admits opening month of season will define Bluebirds' promotion chance

The first few weeks of the season see Cardiff City face a series of opponents who will be challenging at the top end of the Championship

Russell Slade says his Bluebirds will go straight into an A-level examination of their Championship promotion credentials this season.

Manager Slade has lined up major pre-season tests against newly-promoted Premier League clubs Watford at home and Bournemouth away before a daunting start to their Championship campaign.

Fulham visit South Wales for the opening fixture on Saturday, August 8 and that clash is followed by QPR (away), Blackburn (away), Wolves (home) and Nottingham Forest (away) in that opening month.

“All five look top-10 Championship clubs,” said Slade. “It looks a difficult start, but those matches will give us a real taste of where we are as club at that stage.

“Add in those fixtures against Premier clubs Watford and Bournemouth and there is no doubt we will have to be ready. I’m really pleased with those fixtures because they will give us the sort of tests we need building up to our league season.

“They a genuine yardstick for us because Watford and Bournemouth were the top two clubs in the Championship last season. Our job is to do everything possible to live up to the standards they achieved last season.

City’s aim will surely be to earn at least three wins from those opening games and show they will be able to compete with the biggest challenges Championship football has to offer.

Anything less and the pressure will start to build as City go into a two-week international break and then open September with back-to-back home matches against Huddersfield and Hull.

All clubs want to hit the ground running, & if we have any real desire for success next season, then no one team is going to be easy,,, but can be beaten. We have to be positive.
