" Cardiff City boss Russell Slade holds four-hour meeting with Bluebirds chiefs to discuss new season's transfer targets "

22 JUNE 2015

BY TERRY PHILLIPS

Slade met with chairman Mehmet Dalman as he looks to push ahead with his plans for the upcoming campaign

Russell Slade and Mehmet Dalman have had a four-hour meeting to thrash out Cardiff City's plans to strengthen their squad for next season.

Manager Slade and chairman Dalman met yesterday and City are moving to close in on their targets.

Club owner Vincent Tan flew Slade out to Malaysia for face-to-face talks earlier this month and the three men have now established a firm transfer budget and identified targets.

Tan and Dalman have made it clear that promotion back to the Premier League is a must and the pressure is on for Slade’s team to make a strong start to a new Championship season which starts against Fulham at home on Saturday, August 8.

Neither Slade or Dalman would comment on their meeting, but there are likely to be at least three new signings including a winger and dominant central midfield player.

Derby County wide man Johnny Russell was a big target for Slade, but his club have made it clear he is not available.

City have also been linked with Swindon Town flyer Nathan Byrne and £1m-rated Honduran striker Alberth Ellis, but neither are now on City’s wanted list.

Interest in 32-year-old striker Daryl Murphy, who scored 27 goals for Ipswich Town last season, has also cooled considerably.

While the Bluebirds move to strengthen their squad, Slade must also sell, release or loan six or more of his current squad including Adam Le Fondre, who is keen on a move to the north of England, Filip Kiss and Etien Velikonja.

Tan has not insisted that players must be sold before signings are made, but Slade must work within the budget agreed.

Trying to be positive but seeing Slade linked with the words "getting back to prem is a must " just don't go together.

Why not? Our form was playoff form from February onwards last season. When Slade clears out more of Ole's mess and brings his own players in, maybe we will improve again?

Let's put it this way.....

By the end of the next season we will either be back in the Prem or have a new manager. A good outcome all round I say.

You also get different performances from players towards end of season games, particularly if there is nothing to play for. Likewise, you can get some odd results in opening couple of games of season while players are adjusting and getting to know one another. I am no fan of Slade, but will not judge him on the opening 3 or 4 games whether we lose heavily or win by a bucket load of goals. As he is here, like it or not, I think he will have to be given at least 12 games before we can see if we are moving in the right direction. Personally, I can't see us doing any better than last season, and I don't think for one moment that Tan expects anything more than consolidation this season which is why Slade was appointed in the first place. As we have to offload players, and will have to work within a sensible budget, I suppose you could argue that Slade will have done his job if we can finish mid table.

How many more meetings does Slade need to have,he has just had a freebie trip to Malaysia to discuss with Tan possible transfer dealings, now he needs another 4 hour meeting to discuss the same topic,my message to Slade is less talk more action before the season is upon us

Wouldnt have been enough to get the playoffs.

Most of them when the pressure was off.
Talk of play offs is madness, staying up will be the target.

And another good thing is that Slade is brining through some young players that haven't had a look in like Harris Mason and Ralls and I think Slade has done some good business in January I can see him doing it again this summer. :thumbright:

Steve, this is also true but, and it's only my opinion, can Slade attract those types of players who would be self financing and be a big asset to the playing staff, in other words be good enough and better than what we already have. I personally can't see it but I hope he proves me wrong. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

My only hope is if sladr is replaced and we then move up the table.

I wouldn't take 4th from bottom at all and I doubt that Tan would be too happy about it either.

If we end up fourth from bottom it will mean that we have been watching even worse than the boring clueless drivel churned out by Slade for the majority of last season!
