Cardiff City pull out of race to sign Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy

Club chiefs are not keen to spend big money on the player while they have so many other strikers already on their books

Daryl Murphy was the Championship's top scorer

Cardiff City have pulled out of the race to sign Ipswich Town goals ace Daryl Murphy.

The Bluebirds had identified Murphy, who fired 27 goals last season, as a top target, but manager Russell Slade’s interest has cooled.

Ipswich are demanding £4m-plus for Murphy and, while Cardiff were among a number of clubs keen on the 32-year-old, they are now turning to targets in other positions, with a pacey winger the priority.

Premier League Stoke, Middlesbrough, Burnley, QPR and Fulham have all been linked with Murphy along with a number of Championship clubs.

But fears remain Murphy’s golden season, easily the best of his career, will not be repeated.

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade must ensure his side gives the club's supporters something to shout aboutCardiff City manager Russell Slade.

Slade already has nine senior strikers in his squad and only Spanish hitman Javi Guerra, still attracting interest from Malaga, Adam Le Fondre and Etien Velikonja currently look likely to move on.

No bids have been received for any of the other seven, including Joe Mason. Wolves have been strongly linked with a £3m move for Mason, but have not been in contact with the Bluebirds.

City also have 20-year-old Rhys Healey ready to mount a first team challenge and club owner Vincent Tan is not keen to splash out £4m for Murphy at a time when they already have so many attacking players in the squad.

Irishman Murphy was the Championship top scorer last season when his 27 goals helped Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich qualify for the play-offs.

Murphy himself admits he was surprised by his goals tally, saying: “My target for the season was 17 and I had that by December. It was a mad season.”

He scored 13 goals in his first season with Ipswich and 27 in his second, while his previous best was 10. Murphy scored against Cardiff home and away in 2014-15, both fixtures ending in 3-1 wins for Ipswich.

I said when he was first mentioned that I can't see us spending much more than that on players in total this season. I thought all along he was way out of our price range. We will be hunting around for bargains in the lower two divisions.

Great news!

We shouldn't be paying 3-4 million on a 32 year old, one season wonder!

Think we`ve also pulled out to sign Bale too .

Were we ever in or was this used to boost ticket sales ?

One season goal scorer wasn't best option for the money wanted .

Cardiff End Murphy Pursuit

Monday, 22nd Jun 2015

Cardiff City are reported to have ended their interest in signing Blues striker Daryl Murphy.

The Bluebirds were previously said to have the Irish international at the top of their summer wish list but now, they are turning their attention elsewhere with the Blues said to be asking more than £4 million for the 32-year-old.

Town's 27-goal Championship top scorer has been the subject of much speculation since the end of the season with West Brom, Leicester and Norwich all linked on Sunday, while Stoke manager Mark Hughes is also understood to be weighing up making a move.
