The player was on loan at the French club last season with the Ligue One side paying a fee of around £1.4m to keep him for the next three years

Kevin Theophile-Catherine has signed with St. Étienne until 2018

Cardiff City defender Kévin Théophile-Catherine has joined St Étienne on a permanent basis after the French club activated his buy-out clause.

The Ligue One outfit, who struck a deal to take the Frenchman on loan from the Bluebirds last season, have taken up the Welsh capital club on the option of buying the defender.

A regular for Cardiff City in the Premier League, Théophile-Catherine headed to France after becoming disillusioned when he was left out of the side's first two Championship matches by then boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He went on to make 30 appearances for St Étienne last season, 29 as a starter, as he became a regular in the side.

He was an important part of the team as they just missed out on qualification for next season's Champions League but is unwanted by Bluebirds boss Russell Slade.

Reports in the French media say St Étienne have paid in the region of £1.4m to sign the defender.

If we've only sold him for 1.4 million, we've been well and truly robbed :(

Ross, thats £1.4mill of our debt.

Weve been doing bad deals for years and robbed on to many occasions.

Annis, he was ever present keeping out some of the best wingers in France and nearly helped St Etienne get into the Champions League. We should have been demanding a minimum of 3 million for him in my opinion, especially if we think Mason is worth that.

One of Malkys better signings but I bet he was on a good wage too. In addition to the fee we receive we also don't have to pay his contract for another year - I'm assuming at least £20k a week which saves us another half a million.

I do do agree with You Ross, but I keep on saying our club does not know what it is doing and Tan just wants money back ASAP at all costs, there is going to be more bad sales to come.
Tan wants wages reduced drastically.

Guys I disagree with you on this one. Just my opinion but I think that he was nothing special in the prem and he played a role in our defensive woes. 1.5 million can go on strengthening other areas or clearing some debt. :ayatollah:

Fee is 2 m Euro, which is the buyout on his contract.
It's set and probably not a huge difference on what was paid for him as I doubt we would have paid the full fee due to the small number of appearances.
We've got to be realistic.
We can't keep all of our players, we've got too many and a ridiculous wage bill.
I doubt he wants to stay either given the choice.

We've also got Fabio to play right back and he's also on a big wage.
I'd rather keep him.

The deal is a fair one and I hope we'll get more done soon so we can get a settled squad sooner rather than later

Who are these 'best wingers in France'? There are no great wingers.

I think PSG outclassing Chelsea away from home with only 10 men shows Ligue 1 is a very strong league, containing attacking players well above our 3 million rated Joe Mason. I understand Annis' point that Tan wants to offload our high earners, but we could have got much more than Catherine imo.

Me too Annis.
I reckon the wage bill is right back up over £30m now with the loanees back.
We need to move more on - hopefully we can sort deals for Jones, Guerra and Le Fondre which will save us a load and may also bring some fees in which will maybe mean we can bring 1 or 2 decent players in

He has a E 2m buyout clause so that's all we were ever going to get.

It's basically getting back wat we've paid for him which ain't bad considering we've been doing shit business for a while this is probably one of the best bits of business we've done in a while

So we inserted a buy out clause into his contract which is lower than the fee we paid for him? :o

Re: " Cardiff City player finally leaves Permanently(Sold)"

We should have kept him. He would have been brilliant for us, just like Manga.

Re: " Cardiff City player finally leaves Permanently(Sold)"

Yes Tonteg.

Reported fee we paid was £2.1m which at the time was appx E2.5m .

No idea, but part of this might have been dependent on appearances etc.. so perhaps not the full E2.5 was paid.
Even if it was, the loss was only E500k.
Not massive in the grand scheme of things.

My guess is the buy out clause only came into action when we got relegated, but obviously I could be wrong.

KTC was a bit hit and miss in his premiership season, but I think he might have become a class act if we had stayed up for another year. It would have been nice to get back what we paid for him, or made a profit but for reasons of his own (family etc) he wanted away so it's good to have him off the wage bill which needs reducing. I would be gutted if we cashed in on Fabio or Manga though.

Theophile-Catherine leaves Cardiff City to join Saint Etienne

Cardiff City defender Kevin Theophile-Catherine has joined Saint Etienne on a three-year deal.
The 25-year-old French defender spent last season on loan at the Ligue One side and became a regular, playing 42 games for the French club.
Theophile-Catherine joined Cardiff from Rennes for £2.1m in August 2013 on a four-year deal.
"We're very pleased to have reached an agreement with Cardiff," said Saint Etienne president Roland Romeyer.
"Given the standard of his performances, the option to buy was a priority for us and his versatility is a valuable asset to the team."
Reports in the French press say Saint Etienne have paid euros 2m (£1.45m) for Theophile-Catherine.

Probably would have been a better centre back than a right back. Never really impressed me though despite having the odd solid game. Better off without him.
