Cardiff City transfer news: Wolves make Joe Mason their top target after missing out on Dwight Gayle - reports

One Cardiff City target appears to be heading for Bournemouth while Russell Slade braces himself for a new bid for starlet Joe Mason

Joe Mason and Dwight Gayle are both strikers in demand

Wolverhampton Wanderers have missed out on Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle have now made Cardiff City's Joe Mason their top target - according to Express and Star .

Crystal Palace striker Gayle has reportedly turned down Wolves for Premier League new boys Bournemouth, paving the way for Kenny Jackett to up the ante in his chase for Mason.

The report says the clubs "are now getting closer on a valuation, but Wolves are still short of the £3m Cardiff want and may need to go back with a third offer."

Mason is under contract until 2018 so it is likely the West Midlands outfit will have to move closer to the Bluebirds' valuation.

Bluebirds boss Russell Slade is understood to have been monitoring the Gayle situation himself since the season concluded but the £10m Palace are asking for is out of the price range of both Cardiff and Wolves.

The Cherries have been interested in the 25-year-old for some time and the TV money that will come their way as a result of their stunning promotion, gives them the perfect opportunity to launch a serious bid.

If they don't reach Palace boss Alan Pardew's valuation, there is a chance the former Peterborough hot-shot could leave on loan, which would then bring Championship clubs like Cardiff and Wolves back into the equation.

The Express and Star say Palace’s preference is to sell and they are in negotiations with Bournemouth over a fee.

Gayle has two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park but is keen to leave as he doesn't fit into Pardew's favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

Wolves in for Mason is all over the Wolverhampton papers, would be a great move for the lad, to a really big club with tons of tradition and history, and a big passionate fan base in the black country  :bluebird:

Wolves comment: Does Kenny Jackett really need Cardiff striker Joe Mason? Here's what Paul Suart thinks

Before the summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers' head of recruitment and football development Kevin Thelwell had talked about “quality not quantity’.

He was on message with head coach Kenny Jackett having previously said he wanted players that improved the team, rather than making up the squad numbers.

With that mantra in mind, Wolves’ protracted interest in failed Cardiff City striker Joe Mason is puzzling to say the least.

Having reportedly made a £1million offer that was roundly dismissed by the Bluebirds, Wolves were understood to have come back with a £1.5million advance.

That too was rejected, prompting speculation Wolves are ready to table a third offer closer to Cardiff boss Russell Slade’s £3million valuation.
Just to recap, Wolves is a club beyond cautious in its transfer dealings and salary structure.

Yet suddenly it appears ready to part with £3million for a player deemed surplus to requirements at a club who finished four places and 16 points behind Wolves last season.

The Irishman has hardly been prolific in his four years off-and-on at Cardiff, with 18 goals in 80 games.

But the 24-year-old has had more success during three separate loans to Championship rivals Bolton, hitting 10 goals in 31 games.

Yet even Bolton chose to terminate his season-long loan in January by mutual consent.

Mason had enjoyed a really promising start to his international career, bagging 13 goals in 21 games for Ireland’s Under-21s.

Despite a shortage of top forwards, Mason has failed to win a single senior cap.

Admittedly he’s at the other end of his career, but Kevin Doyle, who Wolves released last month, has won 61 caps for Ireland.

So what is it that Jackett and his coaching staff can see in Mason that so many in the game can’t?

Whatever ‘it’ is, Mason would surely only arrive as back-up to strike duo Benik Afobe and Nouha Dicko.

To spend £3million on a fringe forward would contradict the ethos of the club and the financial guidance that filters down from owner Steve Morgan and Chief Executive Jez Moxey.

That or Everton’s reported interest in Dicko has manifested itself in a bid too good to refuse and Mason is being lined up as a replacement not reinforcement.

Time will tell.

If Wolves come in with £2m for him I'd sell him in a heart beat. Our squad has to be one of the biggest in the Championship, and not filled with the greatest quality.

How many strikers do we actually need? LeFondre, Macheda, Doyle, Mason, Jones, Revell, and we're being linked with more! Slade needs to sort of what his best 11 is and work from there as I still don't think he knows his best team.
