Wolves fail in bid for Cardiff's Joe Mason
City want close to £3million
HITC Sport
Wed June 10th 2015
HITC Sport understands Cardiff City have turned down an offer from Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanders for forward Joe Mason.
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett is thought to have earmarked Mason as one of his top targets this summer as he looks to bolster his attacking options at Molineux.
Jackett is in the market for new attackers having seen Kevin Doyle and Bakary Sako leave the club at the end of last season.
Mason's future at Cardiff is uncertain, with the 24-year-old finding himself out of favour at the Cardiff City Stadium having spent three spells out on loan at Bolton Wanderers during the last 18 months.
The former Republic of Ireland U21 international earned a recall to the side at the back end of this season, with Russell Slade giving him a run of games as he started the last seven games of the campaign.
However, Slade is thought to be willing to let Mason move on for the right offer as he looks to raise funds for his own transfer plans this summer.
Wolves are thought to have tabled a bid in the region of £1.5million for Mason which has been flatly rejected by Cardiff, who are believed to be holding out for closer to £3million for the player.
Mason, who still has two years to run on his Cardiff contract, joined the club in the summer of 2011 from Plymouth Argyle and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2013.
Where will Mason be playing next season?

Cough up the 3 mill and he's yours.

surely, if we had ambition, we would keep a core of our better players for top 6/premier push?
(not saying this applies to Joe)
but we must keep the likes of marshall, manga, whitts, fabio -
otherwise we wont have players to compete in the premier should be a miracle, we get there again.
We will be in the same boat as malky time with overpriced players, high wages, b*stard agents etc etc.
In my opinion we shoud be buying fast paced;
a full back
a centre half
a midfielder
a striker
if we dont have ambition in this transfer window, slade will be gone by christmas

It would be better to offload Jones, Le Fondre, Macheda, Velikonja than let Mason go wouldn't it?

Whitts is not a premier league standard player as he's proved ffs of those four manga is a must stay ,Marshall could go for the right money only ,Fabio I would keep ,but I can't see us getting much for whitts ,but I personally would not miss him .

Think you're being a bit harsh, Wez! When Mason returned, towards the end of the season, we looked much better. Him and Doyle seemed to develop a decent partnership. Plus, Mason's movement is good, giving Whitts a lot more options. Surprised we ever let him go out on loan at all, really. I'd say, keep hold of him.

for the money being brandished around they can have him ,I just think he isn't prolific enough

Swap him for ofobe or onuoho or however you spell it 2 strikers would ripped the championship apart last season.

1.5m seems more than fair? If have taken it straight away.
Tue Jun 09, 2015 9:05 pm
Anything over 1m would be a bargain.
I think that he is over rated by many fans. Based on the fact that he has been unable to hold down a regular place at the club's he has been at tells a story. I could not see Joe score more than a dozen goals per season. Unfortunately he is not a prolific goal scorer.

you lot know nothing about football if you think that Mason is no good his movement off the ball and his holding up and passing is getting better, give him a run of games and he will score goals

Since P.R. was involved in the transfer of Mason to Cardiff, I'd imagine Plymouth would get a certain percentage of any transfer fee we receive. So, maybe that could be another reason why we are holding out for a higher bid.

You may been right.
I've always thought PR could have been a brilliant chairman if only he has some comman sense.

Mason will get nowhere near the amount of goals Jones will score.

That may be so but Jones is on silly money. Mason is still developing and has age on his side.

I would sooner have a young player with hunger and potential on sensible wages. Who knows how influential Mason could turn out to be. Whether he stays or goes next season is going to be an important one for him to shine.
Wed Jun 10, 2015 4:08 pm
I'd hate him to go but surely City could do with £1.5 minimum to buy a more proven goalscorer.

Agree totally. Would love to see him go but dont think anyone would take him. We must keep Mason and Manga

I agree 100% with you mate. He is a fantastic finisher, probably the best finisher at the club. But for me, he just doesn't bring much else to the table. He hasn't got lightening pace, he is far too weak when in possession of the ball, I don't think he works hard enough for the team when he does play, I think he goes missing for large portions of the game - I mean we've got one player in the team that goes missing in Whitts we sure enough don't need another one in Mason, cause that means in some stages of the match it would seem like we are playing with 9 men. Also, I don't think that he has progressed enough at the club. Yes, he has not been playing regularly for us in a while, but when he does play I can't see the promise and potential that I could when we first signed him. While he may not have played regular for us over the past season and a bit but it's not as if he hasn't been rotting in the U21's, as he has been on a few loan spells where he had been a regular for those sides.
I do hope that if Mason stays and he does play on a regular basis that he can prove me wrong and finally live up to his potential. However, I just don't see that happening and if I was in charge and we had a bid of over £2m offered for Joe, then I would accept it. Then, I would reinvest the money back into the side and sign a couple of the other quality young players that are undoubtedly out there. Ones who show their true potential week in and week out or game by game and the ones who have progressed extremely well, from the time that they first started at their current club, right up 'til the present day and into the future.

we need better players If we want to go back up ,Dwight Gale would be awesome

I totally agree mate. I cannot believe for the life of me why we are chasing Daryl Murphy. Also, he is apparently our number one target. Yet, we supposedly have no interest in signing Dwight Gayle. Gayle should be our prime transfer target for £4m, not bloody 32 year old Daryl 'One Season Wonder' Murphy. Personally, I feel that we could get Gayle for £4m, which would probably have to be paid straight away, with the other £2m in incentives. I wish we would just drop the interest in Murphy now, before we make any kind of silly offer, cause surely Ipswich aren't that stupid to turn down £4m for a 32 year old, who has only been prolific for one solitary season in his whole career. Surely sense will prevail??

Yeah exactly, we play alot better with him in the team and with a decent run in I think hel bag goals he's a good finisher. Slade obviously wants him and rates him so he's outpricing him.

Come on, let's not kid ourselves. For the right money anyone in our squad is for sale.
We've got a lot of average players on big money and Tan is all about balancing the books and pocketing the parachute payments while they last. So if Wolves come back with another bid I see Mason heading off.
We need to shed a load of the squad players who arent getting a kick or are just not doing it for us, like LeFondre who obviously doesn't want to be at Cardiff so lets just rebuild (not get relegated under Slade) and start over.

Don't think he turned out to be as good as many wanted him to be
Thu Jun 11, 2015 10:26 am
How in God's name can City put a 3 million pound price tag on a very average player... Take the money and run
Thu Jun 11, 2015 10:35 am
When Mason first joined us I honestly thought he was overrated. However, he slowly began to mature and he showed signs of becoming quite a decent striker. Unfortunately, he took that injury and he's not been the same since. He wasn't lightning to begin with but that injury really slowed him down.
I would accept anything £2m or above. To be honest, I think even £1.5m would have turned my head! It's a shame because I think we all would have loved Mason to become our number one striker but a mix of injuries and just not getting enough game time have taken their toll.
