Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy is Cardiff City's number one summer transfer target

Hot-shot striker Daryl Murphy has emerged as Cardiff City’s number one target this summer with the Bluebirds poised to up the stakes to land their man.

WalesOnline understands the 32-year-old Ipswich marksman is at the top of Bluebirds boss Russell Slade’s wish list with the capital club prepared to pull out all the stops to sign him.

Irishman Murphy led the way in the Championship goal-scoring charts last season with his tally of 27 helping Mick McCarthy’s side to the play-offs before losing out to bitter rivals Norwich in the semi-finals.

It is believed a fee of around £4m might be enough to land the frontman and after receiving the backing of owner Vincent Tan, Slade is poised to test the resolve of the Bluebirds’ Championship rivals to hold onto their man.

Slade is looking to add three or perhaps four ‘quality’ signings to his squad for the forthcoming campaign as the club look to mount a credible Premier League promotion push after the disappointments of last term.

Murphy, who has also had spells at Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic, is seen as the man to provide the fire-power to propel the Bluebirds towards the top-six.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Bluebirds are be able to persuade Ipswich to cash-in on the Republic of Ireland international who was recently named in Martin O’Neill’s squad to take on England in a friendly next month.

Cardiff also have an interest in Crystal Palace frontman, Dwight Gayle, but we understand Murphy is Slade’s preferred option as he looks to strengthen his forward department.

Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane is also on the Bluebirds radar with Slade having identified his midfield as the main focus of his strengthening this summer.

The 24-year-old grabbed 13 League One goals last term and is also being monitored by the Bluebirds fellow Championship outfits Leeds and Huddersfield.

I think Murphy and Doyle could form quite a lethal strike partnership. He is 32 years old though so I would be disappointed if we spent more than £2m on him.

£4 million is way too much for a 32 year old! £1.5 million is the maximum in my view! He won't come cheap as far as wages are concerned either! Also his goal scoring record before He joined Ipswich is not that good at all. I'd much rather us go after younger players TBH.

Don't rate him to be honest. Yes he scored goals last season but his record before that is not good at all. At 32 £4mill is a ridiculous amount to be spending on a striker who has had one good goal scoring season. Id much rather spend that on a good up and coming striker than a player who will have 2/3 seasons at most left in his career and doesnt have the most prolific of history

Much too old IMO especially for that price.
Although this is Cardiff City. Buy for for 4 million, slump & give away or loan out.

So much for financial prudence if Slade is going to waste £4 million on a 32 year old.

Very disappointed. Thought we'd be pursuing Dirk Kuyt.

We won't be spending that on Murphy that's for sure. WalesOnline are just guess work, most of their stories come from this forum

The last thing we need here is another one-hit wonder.

I would be shocked if we spent £4m alone although on a 32 yr old

I was expecting someone more like José Angel Carillo. He looked quite good and he looks perfect for us if we want to get promoted next season. Also maybe Ruben Loftus-Cheek might be an interesting signing for a striker or possibly a player called Joseph Monrose looks really good as well instead of Daryl Murphy. Additionally, Murphy is getting on a bit and will be retiring in a couple of years time so the players I have suggested might be more beneficial to us in terms of our future.

Despite his age he would be a great signing on a the cheap if pulled off.

Rubén loftus cheek is a defensive midfielder and was in Chelsea's squad towards the end of the season, sure he had 100% pass rate in his debut game.

Welsh reports continue to link Cardiff City with a summer move for Town’s 27-goal Championship top scorer Daryl Murphy.

Claims that Bluebirds boss Russell Slade is keen to sign Murphy first surfaced a week ago and now WalesOnline reports that the Irish international is top of the Cardiff manager’s close season wish list as he looks to take the Welsh club back into the Premier League at the second attempt, having finished 11th in 2014/15.

Slade is said to have been given owner Vincent Tan’s backing to move for Murphy, who some sources elsewhere claim is also interesting Fulham, with Cardiff believing an offer of £4 million might be enough to tempt Town into parting with the former Waterford, Sunderland and Celtic striker.

However, Murphy has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of leaving Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk, while manager Mick McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans have said they are determined to keep hold of the Blues' key players this summer.

Murphy, who is currently away with the Ireland squad, signed a new contract with Town last July, which currently has another year left to run, while the club have an option to extend it for a further season.

How on earth is that demonstrating us cutting our cloth accordingly? Why can't we go for progressive football with a youth policy and build from the bottom up. Too much money in the game to give youth a chance these days. Bah

I'm inclined to agree. The chequebook management has to go if success is to be sustainable. I also feel that although it would be great to go for promotion, patience and consolidation are more likely to result in the squad being ready for top flight rigours.

Watch this space I guess.

Exactly, learn from our mistakes, start playing a nice brand of football where youth is bred into 1st team action Southampton have a fantastic blueprint to follow. As you said watch this space I suppose.
