Official: Aron Gunnarsson signs new contract
CardiffCity is delighted to announce that Aron Gunnarsson has signed a new deal that will run until summer 2018.
Tuesday 2nd June 2015
Cardiff City Football Club is delighted to announce that Aron Gunnarsson has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Cardiff City Stadium until the summer of 2018.
Aron will return for pre-season training later this month before embarking on his fifth campaign as a Bluebird. The incumbent Iceland Skipper originally signed for Cardiff City in the summer of 2011, from former club Coventry City.
The Bluebirds’ third longest-serving current player behind Peter Whittingham and David Marshall, Aron has made 168 appearances for the Club in all competitions, scoring 18 goals to date.
Speaking exclusively to cardiffcityfc.co.uk from his native Iceland on Tuesday, Aron said: “I’m very happy to be committing my future to Cardiff City Football Club.
“I’ve enjoyed some fantastic times already during the four seasons I’ve been here and look forward to many more as we aim to push on next season and beyond.
“I’d like to thank the City fans for their support and look forward to getting back out there with the rest of the lads for pre-season.
"We’re all going to be looking to hit the ground running and I’m delighted that I’ve been able to sort out my future ahead of returning next month so that my focus can be fully on the task in hand."
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Aron for his continued efforts for our Football Club.

Happy with that. The guy always gives 100%

Brilliant news, a leader and should be captain!
So much for the rumours earlier last week that we were waiting to sell him!

I have mixed feelings with this. Undoubtedly Gunnarsson gives everything and is a talented player but i just worry that with Whittingham and Gunners running midfield again i really cant see anything changing next season, just more of the same.
Personally I was hoping for a bit of a mix up in midfield and i dont think i would have complained if we lost Whitts, Noone and Gunners next season, in that order.
For me the games we looked the best last season were the ones where especially Whitts and Noone were not playing.

Disappointing news,we know Slade will be obsessed with the axis of a Guunnarson and Whittingham midfield this coming season

I like Gunnar, a decent player at championship level. Still fairly young so pleased to see we have him tied down for a few more years.

Sorry, have to disagree. He goes missing in many a game, gives the ball away far too often and gives away countless unnecessary free kicks every game. This includes getting goals disallowed when he takes out the keeper.

Good news for me.

Great news...Not his biggest fans but he is probably a high earner and has resale value, so all the doom and gloom on here is unfounded.
I think with decent outlets the Whitts and Gunnar axis may work, well it did 2 years ago with a decent manager !!! Lack of movement has been our issue.

unbelievable - how low does our club have to sink!
may as well give young and gabbidon 3 year playing contracts as well, beggars belief how backwards our club have become.

I am a bit surprised by the negativity here. Are we talking about the same Aron who Captain his national side to a 2-0 win over Holland and the same Aron who has led his country to 2nd place in UEFA Group A behind the Czech Republic.
Some may say he is a born leader who should be our Captain?

More than happy to keep Gunnarson

I don't mind him staying but thought his rumoured wage was already excessive so no doubt he has increased that.

To me this is a sign of lack of ambition by the club. Make know mistake about it gunnarson has been poor for two seasons now and spends more time on the floor than a Persian rug. Disappointed to say the least. City problem last season was midfield and if he is still parading round in there then nothing will change.

Some of our best performances last season came with Gunnarsson in the team in a role that compliments his style. I am delighted he's signed a new deal. He only got better under Slade as Slade became more familiar with his strengths. I'm expecting a big season for Aron this year.

Maybe if he had a player next to to him that would equally put his foot in and make an effort he would prosper.
Whittingham is now a luxury we cannot afford. And he is also a luxury that hasn't been on form for years.

I agree. Puppet slade should go. Tan will strip club down slowly.

Don't mind him in the squad but with everyone moaning about the weak link last year ad Whittingham and gunnar son. Will this continue?
Lee Batten ·
As long as Slades in charge this club will continue to go backwards. I think we'll struggle next season unless we bring in quality and I cant see that happening. Tan has a team in the Champions league qualifiers, he attention wont be on is.

Some of our fans are never happy! If he was being sold then it'd be a lack of ambition, and now he's signed a new deal it's also a lack of ambition?

This. I honestly think giving him the captains armband would be the making of him. He seems the type that would thrive on the role.

I quite like Gunner, quite like Whitts too
Just they seem to struggle in Slade's set up playing together?
Gunners shoulder must be completely recovered now?
