Brendan Rodgers keen on Championship stopper to challenge Simon Mignolet

Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall has become the latest name in the frame to become Simon Mignolet’s main rival in the Liverpool side.

According to the Metro, Brendan Rodgers has set aside £5m to replace Brad Jones, who the Liverpool Echo report will be leaving the club in the summer, and he believes that the Scottish international is the man for the job.

However, he is not the only man that we are reportedly chasing. As we reported earlier, the Daily Mirror suggest that Rodgers’ war chest to find another man between the sticks is more than double the Metro’s figure. And thus, Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas is the stopper he wants.

Both potential targets could really bolster the position, and give Mignolet a real battle for a starting spot. The Belgian enjoyed a solid second half of the season last year, but only after he had been dropped following a poor run of form.

Perhaps aware that his understudy was not of the standard of a keeper that could hold down a regular spot in our side, the 27-year-old seemed to let complacency creep into his game, and forced Rodgers’ hand when it came to taking him out of the firing line.

However, once he realised that the manager was willing to drop him, he raised his game and really impressed until the end of the campaign. But, there is nothing to say that that confidence he now has will not turn into complacency again. Bringing in a stronger option to rival him will keep him on his toes.

Marshall is certainly the kind of goalkeeper that could rise to the challenge. He was by far the best thing about Cardiff when they were in the Premier League, and gave them some hope of staying up. His reaction saves are his biggest strength, and he has the kind of presence that makes strikers nervous when they are through on goal.

Also, coming from a Championship team – rather than one of the biggest sides in Europe – may mean that his wages put less of a strain on the rest of Rodgers’ transfer budget.

I can see the deal being completed over the next couple of days.

Looks likely unless Marshall doesn't fancy it. Possibly being a number to 2 and rarely playing.
I hope he stays as does Manga.
I believe if we have any ambition at all - which I'm beginning to doubt - we should keep our best players.

While I totally agree with the above on the other hand for 5 mil plus we can replace Marshall! But keeping manga should be our main priority! We need to build the back 4 around him! Lose him and our back line is really weak!

Yes we can replace Marshall as we can replace any player but will the replacements be better?
If a club wants to push on, get promoted & show ambition it should keep it's best players or bring in better ones. Simon Moore is certainly not better than Marshall at the moment.

None of our replacements are as good. Selling Marshall sends all the wrong signals out - total lack of ambition.probably all about Tan concentrating on his other clubs and hoping he can flog as many of his assets here as possible. I really hope he doesn't go.

Lets try to put this in perspective.

Marshall is on £20,000 plus a week, and could be worth £5million to the club. But, he is a goalkeeper.

How many more goals would we concede in a season if we had Moore in goals rather than Marshall? No more than 10, in my opinion, as the standard of defenders in front of the goalkeeper is as important as the goalkeeper himself.

So, if you use the £5million to buy a top quality striker, or even a good championship striker and a good attacking midfielder together, you could be buying yourself easily 20 more goals a season, thus off-setting the extra goals conceded at the other end.

As I understand it, Marshall wants to stay in Cardiff. And my opinion, for what its worth, is that he will only go to Liverpool if guaranteed the number 1 spot in the team. He likes his role as Scotland's number 1 and I don't think he will want to put that in jeopardy by playing reserve team football.

If he goes to liverpool his career is pretty much over .
He will sit on the bench for the next 4 years and lose his Scotland place . By that time his contract is up he will be 35 and will probably head off Back to Scotland to play for somebody like Falkirk .

He should stay here . Lead us back to the premier league as captain playing every week, keep his number one spot in Scotland and possibly go to a major finals with them.

I don't think he will go to liverpool. It's the wrong move for him at this point in his career.

for me this is a no brainer....

Lets use the huge wage cash on 2 good defenders so we wont have to worry about a keeper :)

It's not about ambition it's about 3000 season ticket holders and how much we can afford to pay players and the wages Manga and Marshall are on we cannot afford.
