Mil Stad to host Champions League final in the next 5 years?

Sat May 30, 2015 11:28 am

You heard it here first! ;)

I've been wondering about this over the past few weeks with the news of development around the stadium and official new that the WRU/FAW are considering a bid.

You might have seen news stories about a new entrance way/hotel/conference centre on Westgate street, as well as the improvements and developments to the train station and central square. There's even been news that the stadium are upgrading all the seats at a cost of £5m over the next few years.

I couldn't help but think this is all in preparation to a big event, and the Champions league final doesn't get any bigger. How amazing would that be for the city.

Could very well happen now that cardiff also hosted the super cup.

Would f*cking love this to happen. Big transformation has already started around that part of town, and with the Cardiff blues ready to build a new Cardiff arms park, and turning it 90 degrees so glanmours gap can be finnised, its bound to happen. Stadium, location, great friendly city that caters for all taste, excellent shopping, decent transport, the list goes on. I can't think of a better place to hold a major final. Go on man united, liverpool forums ect and they still harp on about what a great time they had in Cardiff during the fa cup finals. The millennium stadium is a freak of engineering.

The city of Cardiff must be disappointed to miss out on some 2020 euro championship games. If we can pull this off, it would be the biggest sporting event to ever hit Cardiff. I'm talking the F.A cup, ashes, Ryder cup, Olympic football, Rugby world cup, 6 nations - the list goes on. If that isn't enough credentials to bring this event here, I don't know what is.

Would be sensational IF it were to happen and would show Cardiff (Capital of Wales) to be a major player when it comes to sporting and cultural events!

Apparently, Swansea thinking of putting in a rival bid, but UEFA put off after hearing the 'culture' they referred to was more akin to FIFA requirements! ;) :laughing6: :laughing6:

Thought that the Millenium Stadium could not host the Champions League final because there is not enough space around it to cater for the VIP areas. This came up some years ago. Apparently, EUFA needs a load of marquees etc., and uninterrupted walkways for the VIPs to get to their seats.

Saw something about the redevelopment recently. Perhaps that could change things.

Its to do with the infrastructure hotel spaces, media centre, and hospitality space! Stadium already got A1 classification from uefa just needs the rest

We've got the castle and coopersfield near by that can hold more than enough marquee's which have near enough interrupted walkways. I think the problem was not having a conference centre and enough 5star hotels, but that is being addressed with the Regeneration that's begun around the bus station area of town

Yeah we were high on the list for the stadium itself but road traffic links to the stadium, the lack of 5* hotels, lack of airlines flying into nearby airports (so most having to fly to Heathrow or Gatwick.... so why not host it in London if they all fly there???) plus the main one where UEFA wanted tents erected for hospitality and media for over 5k people within a certain radius. All of which we fail on :( The stadium itself had one of the highest classifications in Europe not long back.

I'd they are gonna tart it up a bit can they give the outside facade a massive overhaul. It's always looked half finished.

It's a bug bear of mine the way developments in Cardiff are finished. We go big then cut costs. The outside of the CCS is partially that corrugated plastic you stick on roof sheds and now the new ice rink is finishing off the outside with dull cheap material.

Yeah, when I first seen the plans for the new ice rink, it looked awesome, now I've seen it taking shape, the outside looks nothing like what those plans looked like. I'm hoping when its finished, it will look a lot better than it does now

I've heard the company building the rink may be in trouble and the Devils are trying to buy the site out from under them.

Even in that pic you can see the bare concrete underside of the seating steps.

I just think it looks unfinished and untidy.

Thought they couldn't host it due to poor transport links?

The signs are getting stronger. Apparent confirmation from a UEFA official that our very own Millennium Stadium will host the 2017 Champions League Final. :o
