Cardiff City transfer news: Bluebirds interested in £500,000 Swindon full-back Nathan Byrne

The Bluebirds are reportedly monitoring the defender who was named in the League One Team of the Year
Cardiff City are being linked with a move for young Swindon Town wing-back Nathan Byrne.
As Bluebirds boss Russell Slade looks to build his squad ahead of the next campaign he is understood to have been monitoring the 22-year-old’s progress at the County Ground.
Byrne and Swindon came agonisingly close to making the leap to the Championship before losing out in the League One play-off final recently at the hands of Preston.
It has led to renewed interest in a clutch of Swindon players with Cardiff and also fellow Championship outfit Huddersfield keen on Byrne, who was named in the League One Team of the Year for his exploits last season.
Swindon have recently activated a one-year extension to Byrne’s contract, but it is understood offers in the region of £500,000 might prove enough to prise him away.
Slade is keen to add to his defensive options and Byrne could well fit the bill as well as providing some much needed forward momentum too.
Versatile Byrne operated as a wing-back for Swindon and can also play as a winger. He can slot in at full-back if required.
He enjoyed a good season for Swindon last term, scoring four goals and providing 12 assists during the campaign. His most recent strike came in the first-leg of the League One play-off semi-finals when his goal at Sheffield United proved vital in sending his side to Wembley.
Born in St Albans, Byrne began his career at Tottenham, but failed to make the breakthrough at White Hart Lane. He had loan spells at Brentford, Bournemouth and Crawley during his time with Spurs.
He was sent on loan to Swindon in March 2013 and signed a permanent deal at the Wiltshire club at the end of the that season.
Swindon boss Mark Cooper is in danger of seeing his side, which did so wall last season, dismantled this summer. Massimo Luongo and Ben Gladwin this week departed the County Ground for the Championship as they joined recently-relegated QPR and Byrne could well be the next to jump ship.

Be easier now to make a list of players who are not coming here. Don't think Messi or Ronaldo are, but nearly everyone else is.

Exactly like Fabio going forward, but how's his defensive work?
Looked decent in the play offs but seemed to want to do too much and then he kept losing the ball.

I agree 100%. If Byrne does sign for us, I wouldn't mind seeing Nathan Thompson and Wes Foderingham join him in coming here too. With Foderingham coming to the end of his contract at Swindon, he would be a brilliant replacement for Marshall, if he was too leave. Then again he would be great back up for Marshall, if Moore was to leave too.

If all the transfer rumours are true there's about to be a population explosion in Cardiff. Don't know if there's enough houses available to accommodate all our potential new signings.

Quality player, definitely take him.

Not being funny but why wouldn't this 1 be true. Lower league just what Slade likes. Wales online reporting it & 2 people posted about this on the other forum so why not

This would be a class signing. A lower league gem that oozes skill and a steal at half a mil. He will get us off our seats no doubt.

Cardiff City interested in ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender
BY LEE CLARKE ⋅
Friday May 29, 2015 ⋅
Cardiff City boss Russell Slade is keen to add Swindon Town defender Nathan Byrne to his squad ahead of the 2015-16 season.
Reports are suggesting that the full-back who was named in the PFA Team of the Year for League One last season could cost up to £550,000.
Byrne was an influential figure in the Robins side which reached the Play-Off Final during last season, before being beaten by Preston North End.
Slade is now set to test Mark Cooper’s resolve with a bid for the player as he looks to rebuild he squad for next season.
The Bluebirds are likely to face stiff competition for the 22-year-old with Huddersfield also keen on the player.
Swindon have recently activated a one-year extension to Byrne’s contract although they will consider selling should the price match the club’s valuation of the player.
Byrne began his youth career at Tottenham Hotspur but failed to make the grade and left without making a first-team appearance.
He has also spent time on loan with Brentford, Bournemouth and Crawley during his career so far.

I don't know why everybody in the media is saying that he's a fullback. Yes, he can definitely play there. But, he has been great this season for Swindon on the wing. His best position in my eyes.

He has between 8-12 assists this season, which is very good for a so called defender. Mind you he could do with scoring a few more goals. I'm sure he will when he plays with better players.

Expect a bid in the coming days.

Heard City prepared to pay 650k

Anything less than £750k would be a steal. Is a player that has proven ability. Defenders seem to cope better than most other positions with the step up to Championship from League One too.
