I helped build Cardiff City... now Malky Mackay would consider job offers back in 'Scotland.

Wales online

Thursday May 28th

To be a football manager, you’ve got to have mental strength and have that toughness in terms of being able to take criticism and have belief in what you’re doing on the pitch'

Former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay is prepared to head back to Scotland to get back into club management after his sacking at Wigan Athletic last month.

Mackay’s four-and-a-half month stint at the DW Stadium was his first job back in football after his well-publicised sacking as Cardiff City boss in late December 2013, but the former Watford manager couldn’t halt Wigan’s slide from the Championship into League One and lost his job.

And the the 43-year-old former Celtic defender told BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound that he is looking for a quick return to management.

“For a manager, one of the attractions is to build your own team, maybe not on a huge budget,” commented Mackay.

“As a football manager, it’s about what you do with the budget you’re given.”

Asked if he would take a management job in Scotland, Mackay replied: “Yes,” and added he had been offered such a position “in the last couple of years”.

“I really enjoy football management and I think it’s something I think I’m cut out for,” he told listeners.

“I’m passionate about it. I really enjoyed my time at the clubs I’ve been at and I think I’ve helped to build the clubs I’ve been at.

“To be a football manager, you’ve got to have mental strength and have that toughness in terms of being able to take criticism and have belief in what you’re doing on the pitch.

“The TV money is not there in Scottish football right now. If and when Rangers get back to the Premier League, they might be a more attractive prospect.”

Of particular interest to Mackay would be to one day take charge of Celtic, a team he makes a point of coming home to see once a year.

“The Celtic job, I don’t think there is anyone that would look at it and say that they wouldn’t want it,” he said.

“Obviously you are very respectful to who is in a job, but it’s a huge, worldwide job.

“I’ve been there inside the fabric of that football club during a very colourful period in its history.

“It’s an institution. You only need to look at the fan base worldwide and the potential, in terms of what a couple of the managers recently have done in Europe, to see how good a job that is.”

Mackay is awaiting the findings of an FA investigation into claims that he sent texts of a racist, sexist and homophobic nature while the Cardiff manager.

“I have made mistakes, I said that at the time,” said the former Scotland defender, who welcomes the investigation.

“But I would ask people to judge me on the person they know and what I have been in the last 20 years in football.”

He should go and manage for a team in the lower leagues personally to rebuild his CV.

The Rangers will need a new manager as McCall is only contracted until the end of this season. Not sure he would want that job though as a former Celtic man.

Non-footballing matters aside, he took Cardiff to sights i've not seen with squad built through free transfers and very low money signings (11/12 season). Then with money he made the championship look relatively easy albeit a very poor season for the championship. For me in my 10 years of supporting the club, he's the best manager i've seen here. Just don't give the man a substantial amount of money, then he's clueless.

I think you'll find City fans (of which you are not one, of course!) don't Slate "Malky the manager who got them to the Premier League"

But they certainly do slate "Malky the manager who GOT HIMSELF SACKED for participating in unprofessional and racist comments"

Furthermore, he then 'strung along' said fans when he already knew what the 'issue' was and still decided to hang around n the hope of high compensation rather than out of a duty to the club, players, fans before having to beat a hasty retreat with a grovelling apology to the club's owner!

I suspect you know all of that already Adam, but as usual it won't fit in to your mischievous agenda!

That's were you are wrong isn't it because Malky was already sacked when they found the texts. But don't let a good rumour spoil a good lie

No, I think you'll find MORE were uncovered AFTER he was sacked and you need to remember that the original text was the one accidentally sent to Dougie Freedman by Moody and it was this that started the ball rolling! ;)

The moody text to freeman had nothing to do with Malky. Stop trying to dirty Malkys name at any attempt

I was actually a 'Malky the Football Manager' fan and I may well have got the sequence of events a little out of synch (Moody's texts certainly created a direct link to Malky and led to his subsequent downfall) but I am most certainly not trying to 'dirty' Malky's name. He did that pretty effectively himself!

I'm not defending Tan, as I think he was wrong in the way he handled the whole situation, but Tan sat on what he knew (in a number of matters) for some time and repeatedly asked Malky to resign rather than be sacked!

Malky chose not to do so and subsequently 'hoodwinked' the loyal fans of the club into believing he was blameless in the whole situation and THAT is where I have an issue with him!

And whilst I am here and in the mood, have you seen the latest coming out of YOUR club (Real Madrid) where it now transpires that Benitez is likely to get the job after telling the Club President he would "build his team around Gareth Bale", which was music to El Presidentes ears and 'could' see the departure of Ronaldo to pastures new!

Hmmmmm ;)
