Vincent Tan spells out his Cardiff City plan: 'We want Premier League return, but not spending silly money'

Bluebirds owner says he remains committed to the club but that his management team will be 'commercially clever' in everything they do
Vincent Tan has stressed his financial commitment to Cardiff City – but says the dream of returning to the Premier League will not be achieved by 'silly' spending.
Bluebirds backer Tan had prompted fears from some fans over whether he would continue to fund the loss-making club after transfer and wage budgets were slashed last season.
With the Malaysian money-man also expanding his football empire to take in a fourth club with the recent purchase of Belgian top-flight side KV Kortrijk, questions were raised whether Tan would still be prepared to bankroll the Bluebirds.
But Tan has moved to quell such concerns, claiming his Cardiff stake is still important to him and that his aim is to see the club back in the elite – yet it came with the warning that he is eyeing stability over big-spending.
“Cardiff is very important to me, I have put in a lot of money there,” said Tan.
“I hope to be able to take Cardiff to the Premier League again, but we will not do it in a silly way. We will do it in a more commercially clever manner.
“We made mistakes earlier on but now we are putting Cardiff into a stable situation, we are not doing silly things.
Tan is owed £130m by Cardiff following loans made during his five-year period as majority shareholder.
He added: “Cardiff is now more realistic. We have good management after I brought (chief executive) Ken Choo in, he has done a great job of keeping things stable.
“We invest properly, no more nonsense. This is very important.
“Yes we will still invest in Cardiff but it must be sensible and commercially viable.”
Tan splashed out in transfers as the club reached the Premier League in 2013 and again during the Bluebird’s ill-fated time in the top-flight with the club’s last accounts revealing a wage bill of £53m.
Manager Russell Slade has claimed he was asked to slash £12m from the wage budget when he was appointed last October, telling supporters “we are no longer shopping at Harrods” and overseeing a minimal spend in the last January transfer window.
Slade has claimed he has been given a budget for transfers this summer as he aims to make good on the top-six promise he made when replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, including enough for a significant signing.
It is understood Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy, the Championship top-scorer, is one of the club’s major targets as they seek to bolster the squad ahead of the start of pre-season next month.

Very Sensible.

Annis, I believe that a tactically good manager will get us back up with the squad we have so no need to spend millions of money, Slade will not IMO

Can the club be "commercially clever"?
Based on our transfer dealings in recent years it's been a disaster. Paying too much and then giving players away for peanuts or paying them off.

I agree with this, most of our players don't suit 442 but that doesn't make them bad players.

Good news
While I have no faith in slade the direction the club are taking is 100% correct.

I'm no fan of Vincent Tan, but you have to say he's going with the right approach on this front.
But yes, we need a new manager. I wouldn't be surprised if Slade was sacked in November, but next time it has to be the right appointment.
I don't see us going up next season.

for all his doubters I have to say a big well done to Tan.
The guy could have walked when we come down, said f-you to the abuse and left us in the shit. He didnt. He stuck around and as he says is making us a more viable business model. Other overseas owners tend to come in, fk things up and leave but credit to VT he is sticking to the plan.
I do think if we get the right mix we can be a force again, and I think Tan is the person to guide us there. Sorry but the guy has done lots of positives!

Won't be getting anywhere near the top 6 with Slade in charge. Another season of mid table mediocrity coming up.

Crazy Annis. Only person who doesn't understand the value of a great manager is Tan.

Says one thing, the club will do another. This is just appeasement from the top. Just like those at the top of most hierarchies, its all nonsense. The crap the club comes out with at times, its a wonder more of them aren't in politics.

Therein lies the 'key' issue of our immediate future!

Agreed, there is no historical evidence for any member of staff/boardroom personnel at this club to suggest they are capable of purchasing a squad good enough for promotion on a sensible budget.
