Fifa corruption probe: Officials arrested in Zurich

BBC 27th May 2015

NY Times reporter Matt Apuzzo, one of the New York Times journalists who broke the story: "These are big names in the soccer world"

Six football officials have been arrested over corruption charges at governing body Fifa, as Swiss prosecutors launch a criminal case into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids.

The suspects, who are said to include a Fifa vice-president, have been detained pending extradition to the US.
It involves alleged bribes worth about $100m (£65m; €92m) over two decades.

Fifa members are due on Friday to vote for a new president, with incumbent Sepp Blatter seeking a fifth term.
However, Mr Blatter is not understood to be one of those arrested.

Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein of Jordan - Mr Blatter's rival for the Fifa presidency - described the development as "a sad day for football", but withheld from commenting further.
Fifa's headquarters in Zurich has also been raided by police, with documents seized, Swiss prosecutors say.
'Seeking clarification'
Jeffrey Webb - head of the confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean - has been named as one of the officials arrested, says the BBC's Richard Conway, who is at the Zurich hotel.

Other Fifa officials seen by the BBC escorted by police from the hotel include:

Uruguay's Eugenio Figueredo, president of South American football governing body Conmebol
Brazil's Jose Maria Marin, a member of Fifa's club committee. Police were seen carrying his suitcase and some of his possessions in plastic bags

Fifa was seeking to clarify the situation, a spokesman said.

Not nearly enough of them! Glad they're getting some though. Now they've got 1 or 2 they can offer immunity to take others down. The bigger fish.

Fifa are scum. They have now ruined the next two World Cups before they start.

former legendary players taking money to promote the Qataris such as Zinedine Zidane are a disgrace also.

May I also say well-done to the Brazilians who protested against Fifa during and prior the WC 2014

FIFA have also said the venue of 2018 and 2022 World Cups won't change - how can that be right when the only way the countires won the vote was through bribes?

Those facing extradition to the USA will talk quickly. In the US money laundering and bribery carry very long terms of imprisonment. The FBI will no doubt point out the prospect of becoming someone's bitch in Rikers or Cook County Correctional Facility as a strong reality. They will be singing like canaries within days. This horse has legs; let us hope it goes to that fat slimebag at the top.If proven the World Cups in Russia and Qatar are surely void and new venues chosen with sufficient infrastructures to support large football tournaments. If Fifa persists in adhering to corrupt decisions then world football will be in crisis. The European and North American bodies must insist on a re-vote, Africa and Latin America are basket cases, period.

I think you're right. It's not necessarily what the authorities know or have in proof now but what they will get when those caught now will start to chirp.

TopCat, what's the bookies view? I've already seen a few slash their odds on new locations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
