Rangers' future was thrown into doubt after Motherwell shareholders looked to have hammered the final nail in their Scottish Premier League coffin after a ballot.

SPL clubs will meet on Wednesday to vote on newco Rangers' admission to the top flight needing a clear 8-4 backing of the members to gain access to the top-flight.

Despite a day of frantic pleading and concessions from Ibrox chief executive Charles Green Motherwell became the eighth club to say they will vote against their application after 82% of their 'Well Society opposed to them joining.


With the club having already stated the outcome ballot would be "used to determine which way the club votes" at the July 4 AGM pressure will now switch to the Scottish Football League as to which division newco Rangers will start in.

But a meeting of the league clubs broke-up on Tuesday evening with members split over the question about the future of the club.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir asked the members to go back and consult with everyone involved in their clubs about the what was discussed but admitted they were no closer to a decision after the talks than before.

Longmuir said: "It was important clubs are now in a more informed position to go back to their boards and fan groups and take that factual information to make informed decisions.

"It is time to reflect on the scenarios and consequences and I want to give them space to do that. We haven't even decided on if and when we would have a vote.

"It's time to give the clubs a chance to engage with their fans and work out the right strategy. Votes will come if required."

How did they deserve it, care to explain? The only thing they've been guilty of is non-payment of VAT - and that was down to one man, Craig Whyte, who is now in the process of being held accountable for his role in all this. He withheld the payments without knowledge or backing from the previous board. Could have been us with Peter Ridsdale.

They've been found innocent of everything else by the courts, HMRC etc. etc. but hey ho, it's Rangers - throw the book at them.

This is seriously bad for rangers. Seems like They've gambled everything on getting back into the spl and got themselves back into a shit load of debt in doing so haven't they? I'd like to see them get promoted, think Scottish football needs the old firm derby. its a great fixture

Not good news at all for Rangers or Scottish football.

To be fair, Rangers (as a football club) deserved what happened to them.

Is it really good news for you though? Wouldn't you like to see the old firm back? Its a world famous fixture, great publicity for Scottish football as well as Celtic and rangers the spl. Must be worth a few quid for Celtic like

Great club up the Gers, up the Teddy Bears

Even though Cardiff are my club as an Irishman I have a soft spot for Celtic and hate Rangers. Most people in the republic would feel the same. So the Rangers troubles got a lot of media coverage over here.

As much as I hate the gers there is no doubt in my mind that the fans have been unfairly treated here. Yea They were terribly run for decades and when everything came out they needed to be punished as a club but I felt a single relegation was enough.

Scottish football was piss poor before Rangers relegation it is an embarrassment now. Celtic know they can sell all their decent players for good money at the end of the season replace them with average championship players for a lot less and still walk away with the league.

Celtic need a good Rangers team to improve themselves. Scottish football need a good Rangers side to save it from a slow painful death.
