A Norwich City football fan was reported for "racially abusive" language by a television viewer during the play-off match at Ipswich Town.
The armchair fan from Bolton phoned Suffolk Police alleging that Ipswich player Tyrone Mings had been abused during the 1-1 draw at Portman Road.
Officers scanned footage and arrested a 17-year-old during the match.
The fan admitted using non-racist but abusive language. He will not go to the final under a community resolution.
Police said the television viewer phoned them during the first half of the match on Saturday, 9 May.
The 17-year-old fan from Cromer was removed from the crowd during the second half and taken into custody.
Suffolk Police would not disclose the actual language used by the supporter but a spokeswoman said it was not racist.
Mings told officers he had not heard anything and the person who reported it then declined to give an official statement, according to the force.
Wembley trip
It was agreed to use the community resolution rather than charge the Norwich fan and take him to court.
The resolution meant the 17-year-old agreed to stay away from the second leg of the play-off semi-final at Carrow Road and any subsequent trip to Wembley.
Norwich won that match 3-1 to progress to the final which takes place against Middlesbrough on Monday.
Suffolk Police said it was unable to confirm whether the 17-year-old had been planning to go to Wembley.

The madness has to stop, he is the victim in my eyes

If he said something racist he deserves to be punished obviously.

Shocking. Misses the final because somebody watching the TV heard him use abusive language, yet players are constantly seen swearing and no action is taken. Pathetic by the fan who called the police

The report says it wasn't anything racist

Oh right I read non racist as racist, that's ridiculous then. Pretty sure Gerrard said "this doesn't fùcking slip now" live on TV a few weeks before he slipped. How is that not the same?

Why was he watching a football match if he is to take offence at Norwich's fans hostility toward Ipswich players

The guy is a complete wally (don't want to get in trouble, he's already cried foul once

)

Pretty much every live game you see a player using abusive language, and now and again there are sending offs for foul and abusive language. Very petty of the fan who phoned and the police IMO. Lacking in consistency.

What a Fooking waster of an armchair fan. Haven't the police got better things to do than go and arrest someone for that. All these rapes around the country that has happened and still going on should be a priority.

What a f*cking joke. If every fan who shouted abuse at a player at least once in their lives got removed from a football match, there would be no fans. I shout abuse at a player every bloody week, it's part of the professional game and always has been!

That 17 year old was intimidated into accepting something he should not of. If they tried to take him to court it would get thrown out. Now he can't go to Wembley as part of some bizarre 'community resolution' he accepted

Absolute joke, as mentioned. Gerrard said this does not f*cking slip and wasn't fined for abusive language

This is daft. Every televised match on Sky and MOTD/ Football League show you hear the usual fan chants (and the language). We shouldn't be living in a nanny state. Football is a passionate game. I sit in the ninian stand with my 10 year old boy. He is mature enough to ignore the language. If an adult can't, then frankly he should not be watching football. Just turn off the telly and do something else instead.

Once again football fans are at the forefront of heavy handed policing, why mention "non-racist" just to put the word racist in the public domain to justify their actions, how many other sporting events do fans get quite excited and annoyed at the opponent and with most sports being competitive, fans can get quite emotional and get carried away I think they call it human nature especially with the younger fans, I find this absolutely appalling.

I hope every Liverpool fan gets arrested for singing the Gerard song on his final game. That was loud and clear with his kids on the pitch
Rooney can't talk without saying the word f**k

This is the country we live in now, police state. We are under the eye and you don't even have to break the law anymore to be arrested, you just have to disturb their agenda or fit into their statistics.

so if I see a player using abusive and disgusting language I can phone the police and he won't play in the second half?
Sorry but there is an inequality here and it will get challenged at some point when they pick out someone with a little bit of cash to defend themselves!!!
