Wigan manager Gary Caldwell reportedly had a £500,000 bid for the 24-year-old rejected last night but the relegated club are ready to go back with an improved bid in the coming days.

The Sheffield Star say Wigan were the second club to slap in a bid for the former Mansfield man this week. The first one was also rejected.

Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner said: “The bids have been received in the last seven days and they were both rejected.”

Winger Clucas played up-front for the Spierates after star striker Eoin Doyle departed for Cardiff in January and Bluebirds boss Russell Slade is known to like versatile players.

But nobody at Cardiff was available to confirm whether or not the first bid came from them.

Reading, Cardiff and Wigan in race for midfielder

May 21, 2015

Reading, Cardiff and Wigan are reportedly in a race to sign Chesterfield midfielder Sam Clucas.

The 22-year-old has had an impressive season for the Spireites who reached the League One play-offs.

But after their defeat to Sheffield United it is thought the club are willing to let their star man move on if they receive the right offer.

Wigan, who were relegated to the third tier, saw a £500,000 bid rejected last week, while another bid from an unnamed club was also turned down.

The Latics now face competition from Championship sides Cardiff, who signed striker Eoin Doyle from Chesterfield in January, and Reading, as both look to strengthen their squads as they aim to improve on disappointing league campaigns.
