Newport County youngster Regan Poole has Liverpool trial

Monday 18th May 2015

Newport County teenager Regan Poole is training with Liverpool on trial. But no club has yet made a firm offer for the 16-year-old defender, according to Exiles manager Terry Butcher. "Liverpool were keen to have a look at him so he's gone with some of the younger players to a tournament abroad," said Butcher. "He's attracted a lot of interest. A lot of clubs are looking at him... and it's only right you give a young player like that an opportunity."

Poole became County's youngest player last season when he made his debut against Shrewsbury aged 16 years and 94 days, going on to play 12 games as the Exiles just missed out on the League Two play-offs.

The Wales Under-17 international came close to joining Fulham in January and has also previously had a trial period at Manchester United, who are understood to still be interested in signing Poole. Poole is still on scholar forms at Rodney Parade until the end of next season and cannot sign a professional deal until he turns 17 in June.

Butcher, a former defender himself capped 77 times by England, remains hopeful they can keep hold of him: "I think there's no substitute for playing. "Young players in particular need to play and play at the highest level they possibly can. Regan's had a good taste of first-team football with Newport County and he's done very well and there's still a lot to do with him.
"He's a good prospect, he's a good boy and hopefully he'll play his football here at Rodney Parade and we can progress him then every club will come looking at him. "They've not made bids or expressed interest, they only want to have a look at him so at this moment in time that's all they're doing. "There are clubs that want to have a look at younger players and see what standard they're at, so they're doing their job but we're doing our job trying to progress his career, make sure he learns with us and make sure he learns his football with us. "You can understand it, head's been turned and all that sort of thing, but he knows it's out there, he knows it's there for him or could be there for him if he continues to play on a regular basis. That's his aim and ambition. "The last thing he wants to do is go to a top club and not play."

Cardiff released him at 14 yrs old and he went to Newport, Cardiff had the option for one year to take him back, a report was sent to Cardiff from Newport on Regan's progress but City ignored it.

The youngster made his league debut at just 16 yrs old and now he has a trial at Liverpool.

Where was Swansea's acclaimed scouting team? Would thought they would have noticed him! Surely kids develop at different ages maybe he didn't show it at time with city? After all only Newport took chance on him not exactly top team! Or is this another reason to bash city?

Your very wrong annis you have never ever heard me complain about atmosphere at ground? and I go to as many games I can even though got St on level 4 can't make all game's and will have ST next season  as for this lad my point is only Newport gave him a chance at the time! So perhaps he wasn't good enough at city? Easy to have hindsight about him now Liverpool is looking At Him?

Fans policy of cheaper, younger players and developing them is all well and good.

But this must go hand in hand with a good academy.

You are right, it is shocking. As fans we should be holding the Club to account when things like this happen. It is yet another example of how amateurish our set-up is. :bluescarf:

The Jacks have just signed 3 possibly 4 Cardiff lads for next season on U14s forms today. All have been with CCFC at various times. One a very very hot prospect. But I guess that's football folks. At least they are staying in South Wales. None of these lads support CCFC, so it makes no difference to them who they play for, they just want to play football at the highest level that they can achieve :bluebird:

I have seen him play this season, brilliant timing on the tackle, doesn't get flustered and times his tackle well

Re: Former Cardiff academy player training with Liverpool

I believe the word as been out there for some time now, especially under the stewardship of Solskjaer and now Slade that there is no progression for our home grown players into the first team.
It seems our coaches at accademy and U21 level are just going through the motions of producing players only for them to reach a brick wall when they reach a certain point.
At Swansea they have a passing phylosophy right through the accademy to U21to their first team.
This policy enables them to progress players into their first team and then sell them on for millions.

As I have said before we need a rebuild from top to bottom !

A club ethos and defined playing style right thru from the junior to senior teams otherwise we will never become self sufficient and develop players who will break into the first team! All the coaches need to play the same way and when we change coach or manager the new one must fit that ethos otherwise we just keep rebuilding wasting millions and losing talent!

To be far to Cardiff City I can not think of many players who have been released who have gone onto much better things A few have become professionals at lower league clubs but not many have played above the standard we are playing at
Players will develop at different stages but those who have been in the academy and then released so far they have not done much at all to date
