Wigan Athletic release five but Jermaine Pennant is offered deal

BBC

Mon 18th May 2015

Wigan Athletic have released five players but have offered new contracts to six others, including former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant.

Defender Gaetan Bong, midfielders Kim Bo-Kyung and William Kvist, striker Marc-Antoine Fortune and keeper Ali Al-Habsi will all leave in June.

Captain Emmerson Boyce has been offered a new contract.

Jordan Flores, Matty Hamilton, Tim Chow and Ryan Jennings have also been offered deals by the relegated club.
Centre-back Boyce, 35, has made almost 300 appearances for the Latics since signing from Crystal Palace in 2006.
Pennant, 32, signed a short-term contract in February and has since made 13 appearances.
He had previously been playing for FC Pune City in the Indian Premier League.

Jerome Thomas is the player who I think we should be interested in. He may the wrong side of 30 but has bags of experience, good quality and has pace to burn, but, and best of all is available on a bosman.

Surely worth a punt.

I was speaking to Kimbo a few weeks back. I think it was the Wigan-v-Derby match I had photographed. Anyway spoke with him after the game - His English is really good now! - He said he loved his time in Cardiff and would like to come back.

So we don't want league one players but we are happy to take players that helped take a team down. I mean they must be awful if even Malky the magic manager couldn't keep them up.

Actually Malky was sacked before they were relegated. He probably would have kept them up if he didn't get sacked. :D

Your comment we're happy to take players who helped take a team down means nothing, Marshall signed from championship relegated Norwich, Hudson signed from relegated Charlton.

Yep that Dave Jones could spot a player.

My point is valid. People say we cannot have success with league 1 signings yet these players are part of teams relegated from the championship ergo league 1 players.

I am saying they are wrong. As you proved there can be quality players found in the lower leagues or at those teams relegated from the championship.

Not at all bud. I'd have O'Hara off Blackpool and Chaplow off Millwall too.
