Jake Livermore: Hull suspend player over cocaine test

Hull City midfielder Jake Livermore has been suspended by the club following a positive test for cocaine.

Midfielder Livermore, 25, joined Hull for £8m last June and has made 39 appearances for the club this season.

Hull are expected to release a statement later on Friday.

Former Tottenham player Livermore, who has one England cap, spent the 2013-14 season on loan at the KC Stadium and has had loan spells at MK Dons, Derby, Peterborough, Ipswich and Leeds.

His international debut came in a friendly against Italy in August 2012.

When he joined Hull, Livermore signed a three-year contract, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months.

Steve Bruce's side are 18th in the Premier League, the last relegation place - two points behind Newcastle and Sunderland and three points adrift of 15th-placed Leicester.

They travel to Tottenham on Saturday (15:00 BST) before ending the season with a home game against Manchester United on Sunday, 24 May.

The FA regulations on social drug abuse are quite clear and if this is his "First Offence" he will only get a warning and a maximum of a 6 month suspension. Crazy when you think Rio Ferdinand got an 8 month ban for missing a test.

If he failed a test before he will get a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 2 years, it's only when it gets to a third test failure can the penalties become meaningful when the punishment is a minimum of 2 years to a maximum permanent suspension.

I agree with you Annis and the bans should start at a minimum of 2 years.

If you remember 10 years ago Adrian Mutu got a 7 month ban for the same offence now this guy will get a smaller ban. Instead of attitudes and punishments getting harder the exact opposite looks to be the case.

Pathetic.

Did not Chelsea terminate his contract and took him to court to get him reimburse the fee they paid for him in the region of about £40m?

That's right Chelsea wanted £40m but got awarded £15m and following countless appeals, all lost by Mutu, they are still waiting for payment.
