Club wanted to remember the four who died in the accident on March 6
Cardiff City will host a memorial match in memory of the four people killed in a crash near Brecon during March.
Rhodri Miller, girlfriend Alesha O’Connor and friend Corey Price, all aged 17, and 68-year-old Margaret Challis, who was a passenger in another car, died in the accident near Storey Arms.
The Bluebirds are working with the families to organise the memorial match at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday, June 14.
Family and friends of the four are invited to be part of the day and some will be playing in the match, which will kick off at 1pm.
'I’m sure he’ll be looking down with a smile on his face'
Corey’s father, Lee, said: “It’s been overwhelming. Corey spent eight or nine years with the Cardiff City Academy and the club came to me with the idea of a memorial match.
“Corey had an infectious giggle when he got excited and I’m sure he’ll be looking down with a smile on his face.”
Dave Miller, Rhodri’s father, said: “The idea for this match is a heartwarming gesture by the football club. Rhodri was a season ticket holder, an avid Bluebird.
“I will be playing in the match and would love to think I will dance around like a ballerina, but my two left feet will ensure that is not the case.
“He would take great pleasure from this match.”
'It's a fantastic gesture'
Alesha O’Connor’s mother, Sharon, said: “It will be a special day for all families and friends. It’s a fantastic gesture by Cardiff City.”
More than 40 players, all family members or friends, will take part, using the player’s entrance plus main home and away changing rooms.
Cardiff City FC will provide kits, blue for one team and red for the other as well as match balls.
Ali Yassine, Cardiff City’s regular matchday announcer at Championship matches, will introduce the teams.
Anthony Redwood, Cardiff City’s Academy operations manager, says: “I have been in regular contact with Lee Price for some time and we’ve been discussing options for a tribute.
'We hope this can become an annual event'
“However, we wanted to be respectful and allow the families some time to grieve before we looked at making any arrangements.
“Corey played a major part in our academy programme and in the lives of the staff and his teammates at the club.
“We hope this can become an annual event of the match to celebrate the memories we have of those taken. I have no doubt the match will be a great day for all concerned, and we’re immensely proud as a club to be able to play a small part in that.”
The football club will film the match and produce DVD copies, while there will ne medals and trophies presented after the game.
There will also be a women’s half-time penalty shootout.
All proceeds will go towards a Corey Price memorial bench to be placed at Ysgol Bro Morgannwg and a bench at the Cardiff City Academy training ground, University Playing Fields, Treforest.
Admission to the match will be free with bucket collections and donations accepted on the day.
