Cardiff City and Reading in battle for Wigan Defender Rob Kiernan.
The 24 year old was on loan at Birmingham City and impressed.
Kiernan has 2 years left on his contract and Wigan are willing to offload him for about £100,000.

Honestly, no idea if he's any good.
If he signs I'll make my mind up after I've seen him in a City shirt a few times

Russell Slade in battle with Reading and Birmingham City for Wigan defender

The Bluebirds have been credited with an interest in Latics defender Rob Kiernan, who could move for a nominal fee this summer

Cardiff City are considering a move for Wigan defender Rob Kiernan according to reports - but face a battle with Reading and Birmingham for his signature.

The 24-year-old defender impressed on loan with Gary Rowett’s Blues in the second half of this season, making 12 appearances and turning in a number of solid displays.

He started in the Birmingham side that lost 2-0 to Russell Slade’s Bluebirds courtesy of Eoin Doyle and Peter Whittingham goals at the Cardiff City Stadium back in March.

Kiernan still has two years left on his deal with the relegated Latics but it is thought he can leave for a ‘nominal fee’ this summer.

Both the Bluebirds and Royals have been credited with an interest and Birmingham are also thought to be interested in taking Kiernan on again, this time on a permanent basis.

Boss Rowett, who also had Kiernan on loan during his time at Burton Albion, has spoken of his desire to bring him back to St Andrew’s alongside other loanees Robert Tesche and Diego Fabbrini.

“My desire to try and keep them is obvious but how close we are to that happening is not particularly close,” Rowett said last week.

“Now the season has finished we can move forward one or two of those discussions and see where those clubs are.”

Cardiff played Bruno Manga and Sean Morrison in the heart of defence for much of the season, with Ben Turner returning from a hamstring problem at the end of the campaign.

Manga, 26, signed from Lorient in a big-money deal last summer was named the Bluebirds player of the season while Morrison was a consistent performer and chipped in with six league goals.
