" MAKE BETTER USE OF THE LOAN MARKET "

By Scott Johnson

Thurs 14th May 2015

Cardiff have been using the loan market wrongly, in my view, in the last couple of years. Wilfried Zaha is undoubtedly talented, but a demoralising period at Manchester United saw him join Cardiff with his confidence on the floor.

Ravel Morrison rocked up at Cardiff with high hope, but the reality was that he was wasting the last of his last chances and he was doing neither Cardiff nor himself any favours.

The trick is to source and secure a player desperate to prove his worth and plenty of Championship clubs were elevated by smart loan signings this year.

Brentford were helped by the astute capture of Spurs schemer Alex Pritchard, while Middlesbrough brought in Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford, who subsequently won the division’s player of the year award.

Derby drafted in Darren Bent and Tom Ince, while Watford and Bournemouth benefitted from the experience of Cardiff’s very own Matthew Connolly and Kenwyne Jones.

How bizarre were those deals?

So should Cardiff manage to secure a few players of the calibre of Arsenal’s Serge Gnabry, Chelsea’s Nathan Ake or Crystal Palace’s Jonathan Williams, it could elevate them from mid-table also-rans to play-off contenders.

Chabaloh (sp) from Chelsea would be a great loan signing. Was excellent when on loan at Watford 2 seasons back.

Most top clubs will only let their players go on loan, to clubs where they know they will be looked after and to a club that is well run and play football that will help their players develop,I ll leave you to decide why cardiff don't get any young talent from top clubs

Slade has no access to the top talents, anyone think Bamford just rocks up at Boro without their manager having the right contacts.?

there is a wider more concerning point to this, as Caerblue pointed out, the club is not really fertile ground for player development. Moreover, I do not believe the goodwill is there from other owners to be doing any favours for Tan.

Rightly, or wrongly, fueds that end up with the retirement of Dave Whelan & the destruction of Malky will not have gone down well with the other owners/chairmen.

Yeah, exactly. Dave Jones got Danny Drinkwater because of his good relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson and also got cut price deals on other players (Michael Chopra and Peter Whittingham) due to his links to Premier League managers.
