" Cardiff City Transfers: Everything you need to know about Sam Clucas - the man Russell Slade is reportedly chasing "

Tues 11th May 2015

After Chesterfield failed to win promotion to the Championship in the play-off stage, a race has emerged to sign their star players. Sam Clucas is the one Cardiff City are apparently chasing

A Cardiff City shirt from the famous 1927 FA Cup win over Arsenal is predicted to fetch up to £10,000 when it goes to auction next week.

The shirt, which belonged to the Bluebirds’ Welsh international forward Len Davies, goes under the hammer at Sotheby’s on Monday.

It is one of a number of items of sports memorabilia which will be sold, including Welsh international football shirts dating back to the 1920s.

The Wales shirts include those worn by Davies’ FA Cup-winning teammates, captain Fred Keenor and Ernie Curtis – which are due to fetch hundreds of pounds each.

But Davies’ City shirt is among the auction’s most prized sales – and is estimated to sell for somewhere between £7,000 and £10,000.

Do you still find yourself asking who exactly is Sam Clucas? Here’s the WalesOnline guide to the player you’ve probably never heard of...

Background
Samuel Raymond Clucas

Position: Winger

Born : Lincoln

Date of birth: September 29, 1990

Education: Attended St Peter and Paul Catholic High School in Lincoln

Age: 24

Clubs: Leicester City (youth), Nettleham FC, Lincoln City, Hereford United, Mansfield, Chesterfield.

Total first team appearances: 133+37sub/34 goals.

Teenage days
Released by Leicester City youth Academy at the age of 16 after six years with the club because they felt he was too small.

“I was 5ft 6ins or something like that – dead tiny – but six months after I got released I had a growth spurt,” said Clucas.

“It’s a blow to be told you’ve got the ability, but you’re too small. It’s not like they’re saying your right foot isn’t good enough and you can go away and work on it. They just said height, so what can I work on? It’s frustrating.”

Went on to study Sports Development at Lincoln College, while he also played for Central Midlands League club Nettleham in English football’s 11th tier.

“It was miles down!” Clucas said. “But for me it was more important to get an education and go to college because I’d been rejected from Leicester and everywhere I went on trial I kept being told I was too small.”

A senior opportunity
Manager Peter Jackson took him to Lincoln City in 2009, when he was 19-years-old, and said: “It’s an incredible story. Last week he was on trial, now he’s been in the photo call and he’s been given a professional contract.

“He’s living the dream. He’s a Lincoln boy. He was at Leicester City for six years, was released and went to Lincoln College.

“I’m really excited about him as a prospect. He needs to work on his strength, particularly his upper-body. If he does that, I think we’ve got a real find.”

Spanish sun
He left Lincoln after playing only one game, having failed to establish himself under new manager Chris Sutton, and joined the Glenn Hoddle Soccer Academy, in Spain.

He earned a two-year scholarship, at the Academy, which gives players released by clubs a second chance, after impressing in trials at Bisham Abbey.

“I loved my time at Hoddle’s Academy,” he said. “It was a great experience. The football really suited my style of play, playing out of the back and getting on the ball. There were a lot of players there who are now playing at very good clubs back here.”

During his time in Spain, working alongside Academy coaches Hoddle, Graham Rix, Nigel Spackman and Dave Beasant, Clucas also played for Jerez CF in Tercera Division, the fourth-tier of Spanish football.

Back to the Football League
Mansfield Town signed Clucas from Hereford for a £20,000 transfer fee during the summer of 2013

He signed for Chesterfield during September 2014 on a three year contract. The fee was not disclosed

Clucas had already played six times for Mansfield before his move and then made 41 appearances for Chesterfield in League One, scoring nine goals

The winger, a former team-mate of Cardiff striker Eoin Doyle, was named Chesterfield Player of the Year at the end of a season in which the Derbyshire club finished sixth and qualified for the play-offs.

Clucas played 90 minutes in both legs against Preston North End in the play-off semi-finals, but Chesterfield lost 4-0 on aggregate

On the up
Clucas was working part-time in the cafe at Debenham’s department store in Lincoln when he signed for the Imps - he was in their squad for a match at Goole instead of cleaning tables.

“I’m a local boy who grew up watching Lincoln,” said Clucas. “It’s a dream come true. To get a professional contract is unbelievable.

“I’d been getting up at 7am to work at Debenhams and emptying bins. But I always believed in myself.”

Key man
He slotted in out wide or through the middle for Chesterfield this season, scoring 12 goals. Started the season at Mansfield, but made the move to Chesterfield and played in 41 league fixtures.
