Cardiff City target Chesterfield left winger

Sunday 10th May 2015

By Chris Watham

Cardiff City are being tipped to make a further shopping trip to Chesterfield after being linked with the Spireites’ versatile Sam Clucas.

Russell Slade swooped for Chesterfield striker Eoin Doyle in the January transfer window, luring the League One top scorer to South Wales in a deal that could be worth up to a £1m.

And he has also been tracking the progress of another Chesterfield player, 23-year-old midfielder Sam Morsy, with a potential offer in the pipeline over the coming weeks.

Cardiff, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Wigan were all linked with a move for Morsy in January, but he is on a long-term contract at Chesterfield and stayed to help them earn a play-off spot.

Now it has been reported elsewhere that left-sided operator Clucas is also on Slade’s summer radar.

The 24-year-old former Leicester trainee has impressed as part of the Derbyshire side’s promotion push having risen up from non-league and making a switch to the Proact Stadium from Mansfield at the start of the campaign.

Pacey Clucas has played both on the left wing and at left back as Paul Cook’s side made it to the play-offs, also playing as a lone striker at times, scoring 12 goals in 41 outings.

Slade has spelt out his wish to bring in fresh faces to his squad this summer as he attempts to put a disappointing first season in charge behind him.

Central midfield is one of the areas where he could increase competition for starting places.

It is also thought a right-back, winger and centre-forward are on his shopping list as he aims to mould a new-look team

I'm happy if we sign good quality players from lower leagues. We need pace in our team. We also need players on low wages so we cut our cloth accordingly.

So if we where in the premier league we should go on a shopping spree in the championship? Wonder why other clubs don't follow this brilliant philosophy  Ambition at this club is going fast out the window! :sladeout:
Watched this Morsey kid the other day. Maybe he had a bad day at the office, and his brilliance was on a hiding..

Seen him miss an absoloute sitter one on one with the keeper against preston in the play offs.

If this is the type of quality slade is talking about signing we are fucked next season imo mid table at best

Based on only the Play Off performances both Chesterfield players that we gave been linked with are way behind what we have got already.

If Slade is looking for only cheap & cheerful players from the lower leagues then it could be a very difficult season coming up. Will be interesting to see who comes in and who goes out.

There's plenty of quality in lower leagues. When we got to prem we went to Spurs and signed caulker for 10 million. He's done really well over past 2 seasons hasn't he?

It's all about having a good youth policy and a good recruitment policy. There's talent everywhere. Some of it needs nurturing but it won't cost the earth.

That is so incredible naive! Talent can be found in every league or country on the earth.. But they are picked up in a heart beat with the scouting network bigger clubs have. Im not even sure there are any scouts left at Cardiff, and i think we have lost a bit appeal to talent after professor Slade took over. We are talking promotion material, and not only that, but Premier material. :thumbright: First and foremost this club needs to invest quality in the midfield. Stop f*cking around with Revells and Malones. That, and move forward to the 20th century playing football. If you noticed, the championship this year was playing football. Not head butting chasing balls like it used to be :ayatollah:

Scandinavian obviously wants us to break the bank, it's time we lowered our expectations and think firstly about the financial longevity of the club and secondly enjoying the football... It's guna take a couple years of rebuilding before we make a real push I think

Unfortunately we are not in the position to break the bank, after your beloved Ole blew millions to take us backwards 10 seasons. It'll take us many, many seasons to recover financially and our only way forward is by signing lower league up and coming talent who have the potential to become Premiership players in the future. Because of Ole, drastic cut backs are now necessary, but give me a squad of hungry players with something to prove over the mercenaries living off their past reputation anytime.

No i dont want to brake the bank. I want the club to show some ambition and re invest some of the money coming in. All this talk of taking time to rebuild,. Its never going to happen! We have two more years of parachute money, and that's what its there for. Lick your wounds and go back at it. If people think league one is a treasure chest of promotion material your in for a very long ride. 700 games uncle Fester played that game. Not going to go anywhere! If he wants value for money and players of quality he has to look at central Europe. For the midfielder he has to invest! Cant believe you guys buy his fairytale :sladeout:

Parachute payments are for clubs to have time to adjust to lower income whilst still having high earners on books! ItS not for investing in players but to give clubs time to balance books :o

Spot on people should read the FFP rules before wanting a relegated club to spend vast amounts of money

QPR ARE STILL NEGOTIATING A £50M FINE WITH THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE AFTER THEIR PROMOTION SEASON FOR BREAKING THE RULES

People should realise we can make use of what we have and get the best out of them. We gave Burgstaller away for free, and he had an absolute stormer yesterday scoring and being MOM. Now we are looking to sign this Chump. We dont need to sign 6-7 league one players, we need 1 proper midfielder and someone to get the best out of what we got. Ffs its like people have rolled over and accepted a slow and painful death  Yes, please read the FFP rules and realise what I'm talking about :thumbright: the train is about to leave the station..

I agree burgerstaller would have been class for us, but tan had his say on a number of players daehli being another one and that was that. So now we can't sign 30k+ a week players because a budget has been set.

Re: ' Cardiff City target left winger '

Unfortunately, the reality is that we do need to be looking at signing players in the lower leagues who are potential prospects.

We should also be looking at some of the younger players who are reserves/ bench warmers in the Premier League. Look at the likes of Kennedy and McAleny both have shown excellent promise for us in the Championship but had little prospect of breaking into the first team at Everton.

We need to cut our cloth, but to invest wisely. The starting point is to put some money in finding quality scouts to identify the talent and developing that in the academy.

its clear that slade doesnt know any other market than league one and maybe thats not all bad, hopefully he finds at least 2 from the prem teams likr kennedy or mcaleny to bolster the quality in the squad
