Former Cardiff City star Leon Jeanne jailed for his part in drugs plot

Sunday 3rd May 2015

Jeanne's fall from grace has seen him go from being one of Welsh football's brightest young stars to plotting to supply cocaine

A former Cardiff City player once dubbed Wales’ most promising footballer has been jailed after admitting drug offences.

Leon Jeanne, who played for the Bluebirds in the 2001/02 season, was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

Police said Jeanne and five other men plotted to bring hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of drugs into Gloucestershire from Cardiff, London and Birmingham.

Unbelievable talent
Jeanne was once described by England international Peter Crouch as “the most talented player I have ever played with”.

And in his autobiography, Life is a Game of Inches, former Bluebirds player Christian Roberts described Jeanne as an “unbelievable talent” and “by far the most promising player in Cardiff and in all honesty probably Wales, if not all of the UK”.

Career fizzled out
Over the last decade Jeanne, has repeatedly tried to resurrect the once-promising career that hit the buffers when he tested positive for a Class A drug while playing for Cardiff City.

Following a trial, the final six men involved in the large-scale drugs enterprise were sentenced on Friday at Bristol Crown Court for conspiring to supply cocaine, heroin and cannabis.

Gang leader Marlon Douglas received a 13-year sentence.

Eight other people have already been convicted and sentenced for their part in the conspiracy.

Gang bought cocaine, heroin and cannabis
Henchmen David Cruse and Karl Jones were handed eight-year jail sentences, while Cheltenham men Levi Kelly and Jamie Townsend received suspended sentences.

Operation Kiel was run by Gloucestershire Police between May 2013 and January 2014 and involved a range of techniques, including surveillance, analysis of mobile phones and automatic number plate recognition technology.

Officers identified 10 trips out of Gloucestershire by members of the gang to purchase cocaine, heroin or cannabis.

More than five kilograms of cannabis were seized by officers from various locations, plus a kilogram and a half of cocaine – some of which was as strong as 89% pure.

High speed chase
One of the key events of the investigation occurred in December 2013, the trial heard, when officers from Thames Valley Police attempted to stop a car on the M40 that was being driven by Douglas’s girlfriend Zara Meredith, with Jason Hopper as a passenger.

The vehicle failed to stop and led officers on a high speed chase into the centre of High Wycombe, where the man was able to flee from the vehicle and run away from the pursuing officers.

Officers used a police dog to track him and search the local area. They located a bag hidden in a nearby church yard that contained one kilogram of high purity cocaine, which would have been worth between up to £50,000 or over £150,000 when cut to a street purity.

High quality drugs
Detective Sergeant Matt Phillips said: “This was a sophisticated operation that saw a significant quantity of high quality drugs being transported into the county.”

He described Douglas as “the main man” and explained he had registered a business exporting tyres to Africa, but in reality he was making most of his money from his illegal activities.

The gang leader occasionally travelled with his associates to oversee deliveries and was caught on camera with Jones at a service station.

Police: Public should be reassured by our actions
Police arrested him on his return from Amsterdam in April 2013, when he was also found in possession of a business plan for his drug dealing, which included slang terms for the drugs, specified roles for certain named people, geographic locations to target and an idea of how much money he was going to charge for the drugs he would sell.

Det Sgt Philips said: “This was one part of some very compelling evidence we managed to compile against the group but the thorough investigation that followed helped us take out some major players in the illegal drugs trade in the county and beyond.”

He added: “I hope the public are reassured by our actions and would urge anyone with information about drug crime to call police on 101.”

I recall someone one here giving us an update of his "recovery". Sounds like it was a losing battle from the start.

Fair play, what a fecking idiot  I can understand people getting involved in crime, but when they have been given a talent and are still too thick or arrogant to appreciate it, there is no hope and no helping them

Massive shame! :(

If only he had the intelligence to realise what a true 'gift' he had in his footballing talents!

Sadly, he wasn't able to do that and others (not from this club) need to take a large portion of blame for his demise, as they simply let him down and let him waste his life!

Others need to take a large portion of the blame? Do me a favour lol there's no one to blame but him. He chose that path thinking he was some kind of badboy gangster, chasing the quick buck. Let's not forget, this ain't the first time he was on trial for conspiracy to supply,... He got lucky the first time around which probably made him think he was untouchable. He got off lightly IMO, he should have got at least 10years. The amount of chances hes had in life, and you think other people are to blame for his predicament?

100% agreed. He's a waste of space and only has himself to blame. People like him are worthless. Couldn't care what he could have been. This guy only thought about himself and making a quick buck. If anyone thinks he deserves sympathy or that its a shame they're deluded. The only shame is that this never occurred in somewhere like Thailand and he wasn't sentenced to life imprisonment.
