" Are Football Fans Very Fickle? "

Sun May 03, 2015 8:14 am

Russell Slade was yesterday called to do the :ayatollah:

By Terry Phillips

The fickle nature of football fans was shown as, with a winning performance, the Bluebirds support were calling for Slade to do the ayatollah rather than calling for his head.

The travelling fans tend to be more sympathetic to the under-pressure 54-year-old but he’s not daft enough to know that an end-of-season win will cure all ill-feeling back in South Wales.

Russell Slade will be supported by all fans if his team show some fight and play some decent football at home next season!!

But there lies the problem that most fans do not understand or just do not want to
players are not machines and know what's happened at Cardiff under Slade that nearly everyone was put up for sale or facing being paid off does not create a great atmosphere
New players coming in always take time to settle in a stable club so they must have thought Christ what have I let myself in for
then a toxic home grown who seem to want to fight everyone including themselves

no wonder players thought stuff it and showed little or no collective fight in games

the only way this gets better is if we all pull together and go in the same direction whatever are feelings are

IMHO away fans are in general more supportive and tolerant than home fans.

The 1200 or so there yesterday were excellent

Probably very true but if we'd have lost 3 - 0 yesterday I'm sure Mr Slade wouldn't have been asked to do the :ayatollah: either! :bluescarf:

Are most professional sports teams fans fickle.....Yes.

Its about managing expectations. We are not paying a tenner to watch the local boys have a good go. I started in the early 80's when fans were more loyal but generally our average crowd was 5K. We as fans are more informed than the days of the pink echo, we have means to express our opinions other than a letter to the editor.

There is a kidology in play here. I think Kenwyne Jones is rank, but I'll sing the KJ chant to get the lazy bugger gee'd up. I don't think Joey mason is super, but we need his confidence up. I think Slade is out of his depth, but if he is here in August, I'll chant his name.

Travelling away means you make a day of it, whatever the circumstances of the game. At home, fans expect to be entertained, and in my opinion that is not to much to ask.

No worse than Madrid or Newcastle fans. That's about it.

Look at the Derby fans yesterday walking out when they were 2-0 down.
I don't think our fans are that much more fickle, just spoilt in recent years that's all.

Football has changed (although don't tell Slade). Attendances are up, ticket prices are high compared to average wages, social media, dedicated websites and of course football management sims make every Tom,Dick and Harry a tactical expert. The demographic has changed.

We all believe we know better and are entitled to express that view. The Whitts or Fabio debate rips us down the middle, but when it affects performances its a concern. Any surprise we are hopeless at home but OK away ?

A lot of our fans would rather be proved right and we lose than be wrong when we win.

Part of the reason we have been winning away and struggling at home the travelling support do just tthat support
at home the slightest mistake and many fans turn on individual players
