8 goals in 3 games without Whittingham

Sat May 02, 2015 1:49 pm

We've scored 8 goals in 3 games without Whittingham and we've won all 3 games. If we get a decent offer for Whittingham this summer, we should sell him. He isn't getting any younger and we get outbattled, outpaced and outmaneuvered down the middle with Whittingham playing, plus he slows the tempo down too much when in possession which restricts our chances of penetrating the opposition.

Joe Ralls is the future, Ralls will be just as good a footballer as Whittingham, but he's also a lot sharper and covers more ground than Whittingham. I also thought having 2 defensive midfielders in the middle today in Gunnarsson and O'Keefe gave us a more solid centre which allowed us to win the battle and control the game. I don't think we would have looked so comfortable today if Whittingham was playing.

Forest didn't threaten until the referee inexplicably sent Marshall off. Marshall felt he was elbowed in the face so he squared up to their player, making no contact with their player whatsoever. Marshall then gestured to the referee that he got elbowed, I didn't see him do anything else to warrant a sending off. I'm assuming the referee sent Marshall off for squaring up to their player, but if that's the case why wasn't everyone else involved in the scuffle sent off? It looked a very bizarre decision to me.

Anyway, a good finish to the season without Manga and Whittingham, we've finished 11th. Seeing Turner step back in and players like Pilkington coming on off the bench gives me plenty of optimism for next season. Slade has steadied the ship, Slade has drastically reduced our budget and Slade has gradually improved us. Our 11th place finish proves that. I will look forward to seeing how Slade does next season now he doesn't have to make any drastic cut backs or sort out an enormous mess left by a previous manager. Surely everyone can now admit Slade deserves a full pre-season to prepare us for next season to show if he can take us forwards?

I cant understand why Slade hasnt used these few weeks to try a few things out in central midfield. We know what Gunnar and Whitts do together. More of O'Keffe, Ademymi and Ralls centrally would have given us a better insight into next season. For me Whitts in a 4-4-2 these days just doesnt work.

Luke, I believe the only way Whittingham can be effective for us now is in a 4-5-1 system, with 2 workers around him.

I agree, he is still great on the ball and Im not one of those people who thinks he is laxy but with only two in the middle you need more movement and power than Whitts can offer.

The three games that Peter Whittingham haven't played we have:
Won all three
Scored eight goals

Its not just Whittingham. Noone wasn't playing today either and midfield looked much stronger as a result of both their absences. Kennedy was looking good as was Ralls and O'Keefe. Pilks looked strong when he came on too. Reasons to be optimistic for next season.

I only hope that Slade has the courage not to select Noone and Whitts by default next season. I wouldn't lose any sleep if Noone was sold on.

I also thought that Moore looked solid today.

I really enjoyed watching the game today. The atmosphere was also excellent. Maybe if we can improve this when playing at home next season performances will also improve :)

If slade axes whitts and noone from this side next season we might have a chance. If they stay in the side the same will happen as this season we will be a mid table side.

The trouble is everyone can see it bar Slade. As long as this clown will be here Whittingham will be a shoe in :sladeout:
