Cardiff City U19 1-3 Swansea City U19 match report: Swans stun Bluebirds to claim sixth straight Welsh Youth Cup win

Cameron Toshack's Swansea City U19 celebrated their ninth Welsh Youth Cup win at the home of arch-rivals Cardiff City

Cardiff City U19 1-3 Swansea City U19
Swansea City won the Welsh Youth Cup for a sixth successive season with an emphatic win at Cardiff City Stadium.

The young Bluebirds had a spell during the first half when they were on top, but Swansea deserved their win.

This is the ninth time Swansea have won the cup, while Cardiff City have lifted the trophy eight times.

Swansea took an early lead when centre-half Keston Davies headed in from a superbly struck Kyle Copp free-kick after only 75 seconds.

That was a major blow for the young Bluebirds and they were under pressure for some time, but grew into the first time and looked dangerous.

Elvis Menayese did find the net for Cardiff, but that effort was ruled out on an offside decision.

Tom James did well at the heart of the baby Bluebirds' defence, while 17-year-old Rhys Abbruzzese made dangerous, darting runs from left-back which caused the visitors problems.

But the Swans passed the ball with an easy style, while captain Davies was a strong influence at the back.

Three minutes after half-time Swansea scored their second when Owain Jones fired home from close range after Cardiff keeper Joe Massaro had half saved a fierce shot from the right.

Cardiff changed their formation in a bid to gain a foothold in the final when Jamie Bird was sent on for Macauley Southam.

Davies and centre-back partner Joseph Rodon, though, were strong and solid at the heart of Swansea’s defence.

Centre-forward Jones scored Swansea’s third goal when Cardiff defenders backed off and gave him the chance to shoot. He fired low into the corner with keeper Joe Massaro well beaten.

Substitute Eli Phipps pulled a goal back for the Bluebirds, steering a low cross from the right into goal after 89 minutes.

That was to trouble Swansea, though, and they eased through three minutes injury time to make sure they clinched victory.

At half-time Cardiff looked capable of making life tough for the Swans, but the visitors were much the better team after the break.

Cardiff were awful, Swansea wanted it more and knew their roles. Cardiff team were bad, and the keeper, at fault for 3 goals!

This goes back to our Martinez days, back to league one, where he wanted all of our age groups playing the same style of football.

It will have evolved since then, but these things take time. There has been a big improvement over the years in our age groups, and we are probably 2 or 3 years ahead in this area at the moment.

On that note, both of our teams should be competing at a higher level than the FAW youth cup if our youngsters are to develop.

Last night was probably the only decent competition that either side have faced.

Cameron Toshack???

I presume that this was the son of none other than John who TRIED to ply his trade as a striker at CCFC and was absoultely DISMALL to say the least. I rmember him playing several games and was awful. Glad to see he is a better manager thatn he was a striker!
