McNaughton faces another summer of uncertainty but says he'd welcome a return to the Cardiff City Stadium
Cardiff City's longest-serving player Kevin McNaughton is back in South Wales on Tuesday to thrash out his football future with manager Russell Slade.
Scottish full-back McNaughton is among 15 players loan players called in by Slade next week to discuss whether they have a long-term future with Cardiff City.
The 32-year-old Dundee-born defender is out of contract this summer after nine years with the club, but Slade does need to bring in a right-back and McNaughton would jump at the chance of a straight battle with Lee Peltier for the starting place.
“I have some great memories of my time with Cardiff City and love the rapport I have had with the fans,” said McNaughton.
“I am open-minded about next season, but it’s important I play regularly.”
Crunch time! What will happen when Cardiff City boss Russell Slade holds key talks with his loan stars?
If McNaughton does move on then Peter Whittingham, who signed for Cardiff seven months later after the Scot, would become City’s longest-serving player.
And the defender added: “I’m hanging on in there at the moment.”
McNaughton has made almost 300 first-team appearances for the Bluebirds and is unlikely to be going back to Bolton where he had a difficult time after Neil Lennon took over from Dougie Freedman as manager.
The right back suffered a serious leg injury in March but before that, was openly lambasted by Bolton boss Neil Lennon who told him: "You're not fit enough!"
“It’s been a bit of a nightmare season for me, finishing with a broken leg,” McNaughton said.
“It’s nobody’s fault, but things didn’t work out for me.
“I suffered a fractured fibula at the beginning of March, but my recovery is going really well.
“I’ll be working on my fitness over the summer and will be ready to go, wherever I am, when pre-season starts.
“I badly want to keep playing, though, and I’ll see what comes up.”

McNaughton was injured after only 12 minutes of Bolton’s 1-1 draw against Reading in March, a massive blow after regaining his starting place for the first time in five months.
“It was a kick, not a massive challenge,” he said.
“My weight was on that leg and I knew something wasn’t right, but at that stage I didn’t think it was serious.
“The x-rays showed a fracture and I had an operation pretty quickly. That was six or seven weeks ago now and I am well on the mend.
“Cardiff’s medical department will check me over when I go to see the manager and then I will be able to start looking to the future.”
McNaughton’s family moved with him to Bolton, his children are at school in the area and they are staying in the north of England as he looks to sort out his football future.
“I still keep in touch with the lads at Cardiff City,” he quipped.
“The club has changed a bit.
“This season more than any season really.”
McNaughton made five Premier League appearances for the Bluebirds, all of them after manager Malky Mackay had left the club, and signed a new one-year contract offered by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Cardiff City's missing man Dikgacoi insists he has no intention of leaving despite nightmare season
“The manager said I was going to be part of his plans, but then Bolton asked about signing me on loan and they were offering regular first-team football,” says McNaughton.
“I didn’t want to spend the season watching from the stands and not playing.
“I want to be involved and that’s exactly how I feel about next season.
“I love playing and I want to sign for a club where I have a chance of being a regular first choice if I’m playing well.
“I’m under contract with Cardiff until the summer and I’ll have a chat with Russell Slade and make some decisions after that.”

I like super kev I would keep him

sounds like he wants to stay and so he should. should never have been loaned out in the first place. give him another year and get rid of KTC.
peltier, malone, fabio, kev is solid enough full backs for this division. ideally keeping connolly and john for cb and wing and fb cover also.

Bring back super Kev!

Better than all our right backs at the club especially with Slades defend first mentality.
KTC will be gone. Connolly is a centre half who can play full back, Fabs will be gone with this clown, Dec will be a left midfielder or gone. Jazzi or Tom James ?
I think Peltier is poor. Connolly is a centre half who can play full back, Peltier is a full back who can play centre half. Kev is better than both at full back
