Cardiff City captain David Marshall wanted by Premier League chasing Derby County -

Tues 28 April 2015

Steve McClaren linked with summer swoop for Cardiff and Scotland number one as Derby seek promotion

Premier League chasing Derby County are being linked with a summer swoop for Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall.

Reports in London and the east Midlands suggest Steve McClaren’s promotion seekers are ready to test the resolve of the Bluebirds hierarchy who want to hang onto the best goalkeeper outside of the top flight.

Marshall, who had a brilliant Premier League campaign with Cardiff, has led the Bluebirds into Championship battle throughout 2014-15 despite being linked with Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool last summer.

He hasn’t hit such heights under Russell Slade this time around, but other clubs seeking to bolster their goalkeeping options will be aware of Cardiff’s struggles.

Marshall signed a new contract in February last year which expires in 2018 and Derby would have to offer a huge sum of money to persuade the Bluebirds to part company with their captain.

But if they go into the Premier League via the play-offs, McClaren’s side will have a TV bounty to spend on bolstering their side.

Derby face Reading on the final day of the Championship season and are expected to seal their place in the play-offs.

Marshall and centre-half colossus Bruno Manga are likely to be the Bluebirds attracting most interest from other clubs this summer.

Derby County look set to make an ambitious swoop for Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall, according to the Sun.

Marshall was linked with a move to Everton earlier on in the summer after a stunning season in the Premier League last year, where he made some incredible saves and was considered unlucky to be named in the team of the year, over Petr Cech.

Arsenal and Liverpool have also previously expressed interest in the 30-year-old.

Although his season this year has been less impressive, he’s still kept nine clean sheets this season. The goalkeeper signed a new contract in February last year which expires in 2018.

Derby will probably have to fork out a fair amount to land the Scotland international, who will probably replace 32-year-old Lee Grant between the sticks, who returned to Derby in 2013.

The Rams face Reading in the final day of the Championship season, and are well in the play-off mix in the division, with the side currently sixth in the league having amassed 77 points this season.

He's highly rated, who can blame him. He hasn't been at his best this year, but then who has? £2-3 million for him could go towards other areas where we need improvements. I'd be pretty happy with Simon Moore as first choice.

Moore could do a solid job, we would have Lewis for back-up and we would have £4 million in ten bank ready for new players. Win-win situation.

Sell your best players its a lose lose situation

if they sell him now at 2-3mil, wouldn't it of been more sensible to of sold him before the season started for 5-6mil?

You know, sell players at their highest value...like proper football clubs do

We thought we'd competing to go back up then, so we wouldn't have sold our best players. Total change now, and the bad season as seen our players prices drop.

He owes us nothing and deserves another shot at the Premier League. Moore is an adequate replacement. :sladein:

Yes, there's a spate of this continuing in football these days

all clubs throughout the world are worried... all they have to do is sell some players and the season ticket holders might stop coming...

It's not like they support the whole team or anything...

Not surprised as Grant has been poor for the rams.

Moore is nowhere near good enough. Lewis is neither. If Marshall goes then need a decent keeper.

But bigger problems than a keeper.

If this manager continues playing 4-4-2 with Gunnarsson and Whittingham then forget anything but a relegation scrap next season.

Need a combative dynamo sort of midfielder with pace, and technical ability. Gunnarrsson does not qualify for any of those.

Then of course we need to question the lack of quality at full back. Malone and Fabio seriously?

And wingers. Noone is shot.

And strikers. Revell, Doyle, Macheda, Jones, Guerra, Maynard, Healey and Velakonja anyone?

New manage and 7-8 new players needed.

Get a decent manager at this level, and he'll get the requisite players if Dahlman says hat he'll back a manager in the market. Unfortunately Tan has backed Slade which is the wrong decision.

I have renewed because I love my football club but I hate the administration and don't rate the manager and most of the players.

I actually agree. Unless he is forced by the club but even then I'm not sure he will go lightly. It's well documented he loves it here and his family are settled. The only two reasons he would leave would be...

1. Play for a Premier League team.
2. Forced sale by the club.

Ideally, I hope we keep Marshall for next season. I'd love to see him finish his career with us. A proper legend for the club.

We must build the team around our few class players and keeping Marshall and Manga is crucial to any promotion challenge.

Any player who is worth a reasonable amount of money will be gone if a sensible offer is received. We have been here before many years back, and once again we will be relying on cheap purchases and free transfers in the hope that we can maintain our championship status. I firmly believe that Tan is not interested in gambling with his cash again in the hope of getting back to the Premier League, and is just looking for stability until the time comes when he can try and sell the club.

I repeat my previous assertion that David Marshall (and his family) are happy in Cardiff and at Cardiff City FC and are not looking to leave unless 'told' to go!

As it appears the club want to keep him and he is on a long contract, the status quo remains and Marshall, the club and its (genuine) fans should be grateful for that!

David Marshall is a true Bluebird and has been at the club longer than many supporters! ;) :laughing6:

Re: UPDATED ' CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB SET TO SWOOP FOR MARSHALL "

We have to remember the player has to sign the contract.....Now normally its in their favour so it makes sense to move, but Marshy must be on top dollar, lets say a million a year, what sort of contact would he want to move his family to Derby ? £1.5 million for four years and a signing on fee ?

Lets say Whitts is also on a million, has 2 years left on his contract and Bristol city wanted him. Bristol offer city a million for him, but only offer Whitts £700K a year. He doesn't sign unless there is a £600k sweetener from city. So in fact we sell him for £400K.

Now city slicker would be all over this :) but these older players, settled in the area are hard to move if they don't fancy it. I remember Brum had murder trying to offload that Balkan giant they bought, I don't think they ever did his contarct just ran out.
