Cardiff City 3 - 2 Blackpool

Result: Cardiff City easily see off Blackpool thanks to an Eoin Doyle double

Two penalties from Eoin Doyle and a goal from Joe Mason helped Cardiff City ease past Blackpool, who did nothing to prove why they should not have already been relegated.

The game started quietly until Mason put the home side in front. Doyle's cross found the striker via a deflection and the Irishman managed to turn in a tight spot to rifle the ball into the back of the goal.

Doyle doubled Cardiff's lead after Henry Cameron fouled Aron Gunnarsson in the area and the striker stepped up to send Elliot Parish the wrong way.

Blackpool grabbed a goal back just after the break when Andrea Orlandi, who came on at half time, was given time and space to fire low into the corner of the net.

Jamie O'Hara was then shown a yellow card for The Seasiders for his part in a melee between Dom Telford and David Marshall.

Doyle grabbed his second penalty of the afternoon after Miles Addison barged Mason off the ball and Doyle tucked the resulting spot kick away with ease.

Peter Clarke grabbed Blackpool's second late into injury time after slotting in an O'Hara cross, but the damage had already been done.

The 3-2 win sees Cardiff rise to 13th in the Championship.

Cardiff City signed off a very disappointing season in the Welsh capital with a deserved victory over already relegated Blackpool.

Russell Slade’s men won just their third game in 14 attempts in front of their own fans thanks to a goal from striker Joe Mason and two expertly converted penalties by his partner up-front, Eoin Doyle.

The Tangerines, who have now completed the campaign without a win on the road, threatened to make a game of it just after the break when former Swansea City man, Andrea Orlandi, fired home and the visitors got another deep into added-time at the end thanks to skipper Peter Clarke, but it all proved not enough.

With injuries forcing Scott Malone and Peter Whittingham out, in came Fabio and Matthew Kennedy to try to help Cardiff salvage just a little pride.

And the home side dominated the first-half and were ahead on 19 minutes when great work by Doyle saw him lay off for Craig Noone and surge down the right to collect the return ball.

The striker put in a great low cross and although it looked as if Mason had been crowded out, he managed to dig out a close-range shot that bounced into the net via a deflection.

It was Mason’s first goal for the club since way back on April 1, 2013. Fabio’s cross ten minutes later bounced off the Blackpool bar as the Bluebirds kept a firm grip on things.

On the half-hour they were two up. Henry Cameron clearly tripped Aron Gunnarsson in the box and Doyle showed strong nerves to fire home from the spot.

Eoin Doyle slots a penalty to put the Bluebirds 2-0 up
Cardiff were startled just minutes into the second period though as Orlandi curled home a left-foot shot from just outside the box, but it proved a false dawn for Lee Clark’s men.

The Bluebirds went back on the attack and substitute Anthony Pilkington forced former Cardiff goalkeeper Elliot Parish in the Blackpool goal to save at the second attempt on 72 minutes and then the Bluebirds re-established their two-goal cushion, again from the spot.

On 76 minutes Miles Addison barged Mason over and referee Stephen Martin was again pointing at the spot.

Doyle was the vision of calmness once more as he sent Parish the wrong way from 12 yards. Clarke’s goal, a shot from eight yards out, in added time proved not enough for the visitors.

As it was the Bluebirds completed their home campaign on a bit of a high.

Sadly that proved very out of keeping with the way the rest of their season has panned out this time around. The Bluebirds travel to Nottingham Forest next weekend for their final outing of this Championship campaign.
