Well said Denzil & agree.

Channel 4 seems to revel in making programmes like this & its not only a problem in Merthyr either its in all the major towns & cities in Wales & Britain.

The guy who made it is from Merthyr and I bet his not invited for Sunday dinner at the moment

The first episode really showed the worst of Merthyr but it's no reflection on Merthyr. Just a reflection on the lower bracket of society across the country.

I actually thought the episode this week was terribly heartbreaking and inspirational in equal measure. It showed the effort people are going to in defiance of their circumstances. I'm sure, knowing Channel 4, it will go back to mocking individuals again next week but it showed how some people in the face of adversity never let their plights beat them. You have to respect that.

So who do we blame for this scar on society. Easy to blame governments, but people need to help themselves

I think it's a mixture to be honest. Recent governments have only been keen to look after themselves and the elite. The recent Labour government was never a true Labour government. It was Blair's Etonistic idea of government. The top bracket of society needs to stop taking so much and getting away with having so much.

However, some people don't do themselves any favours and are at the bottom because of their own laziness, apathy, and lack of work ethic.

imagine the difference in work ethic in this country if overnight the government said 'no benefits anymore'

Re: #Skint

Our society has lost itself since we abandoned discipline in this country. The removal of national service and borstal correctional establishments meant many adolescent men who had gone off the rails were left to their own devices. There was no respect in society, no work ethic for many. The removal of discipline in our schools added to this and now we have 4th and 5th generation people who have experienced no discipline in the house or at school. Add to this the policies of making it more attractive and beneficial to live on the sick or dole to that of working and a time bomb was created which we are now in the middle of.

I think a large quantity that abuse the benefits system would just turn to crime if it wasn't there. The benefits system saves a lot of people. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live the lives that we do. It does get abused though and these abusers need to be dealt with.

I totally agree with you on this Denzil.

I was once told that reverting back to a draconian, disciplined, & orderly culture & society would not only be too expensive now to police, but would take about five years to show any improvements to society overall.

I'm no expert, but I for one would be willing for such change,,,,however long it would take. I do think that failure to tackle these social issues is not an option. There simply is no other way!

You would have thought that but the figures don't agree anymore. The benefits have gone down since the Tories have taken over but crime has too. Whether we like it or not the CCTV in this country is a huge plus to fighting crime on the streets and high streets in the country these days

Only two things would happen, the willing would find any job and the rest would be on the streets.
I have always believed in benefits being regionally based, a huge budget has been pumped into Merthyr to create Job's but whilst the poor are living off a London based lifestyle why would they want to work ?

Quite funny that I know a few people on it.
