Police want to speak to this man after a train passenger was headbutted

Can you help police track down this train passenger in a Wales rugby top?

Officers are appealing for information after another passenger was headbutted in what appears to be an unprovoked attack and a carriage window was smashed during a fracas at Abergavenny.

The images have been released by British Transport Police after the disturbance on the train on the same day Wales played Ireland at home in the Six Nations.

It happened on the 8.55pm Cardiff to Chester service on Saturday, March 14.

Police would like to speak to the man in a Wales rugby shirt.

Pc Craig Farrell, investigating, said: “At approximately 9.40pm, a 43-year-old man, from Hereford, was stood with his wife and friends in the carriage. Moments later, he was headbutted by a man in an unprovoked attack.

“Other passengers intervened and the man was pulled from the carriage and onto the platform at Abergavenny.

“At this point the man struck the carriage window with an unknown object, causing it to shatter.”

Police were called but the suspect had fled the station prior to officers’ arrival. The train window damage cost an estimated £200 to repair.

Pc Farrell added: “This was a violent and seemingly unprovoked assault and we are doing all we can to catch the person responsible. Everyone has the right to travel on public transport without the fear of violence of any kind.

“Who is the man in the Wales rugby shirt? I am appealing for the public’s help in identifying him, as I believe he will be able to assist the investigation. If you know him, or have any further information about this incident, please get in touch.”

Anyone with information about this incident should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference W/B13 of 16/04/2015. Alternatively, information can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
