Ipswich 3-1 Cardiff: Mick McCarthy's side remain in play-off hunt as Cole Skuse breaks goal-scoring duck in stunning style

- Freddie Sears opens the scoring for Ipswich after just eight minutes
- Cardiff equalised five minutes later through an Eoin Doyle header
- Cole Skuse scores first goal for Ipswich with brilliant 30-yard effort
- Daryl Murphy seals the win with a third goal in the 90th minute

Cole Skuse's first Ipswich Town goal, the winner against Cardiff City to keep them in the final playoff spot, was a long time coming but boy was it worth the wait.

After 21 months and 82 appearances since he signed from Bristol City in July 2013, Skuse opened his account with a 30-yard effort which could barely have been struck sweeter.

The score was already 1-1 when, in the 29th minute, Cardiff defender Bruno Ecuele Manga stretched to clear on the edge of the box and the ball bounced to Skuse, who hit it first time then watched it fly in off the right post.

It was a torrid night for Ecuele Manga who was all too easily shrugged away from the ball when Ipswich striker Freddie Sears ran on to a long pass from Christophe Berra, took a touch and then finished low under David Marshall to open the scoring after eight minutes.

But five minutes later Cardiff levelled against the run of play. Scott Malone sent in a wonderfully arced cross from the left which was headed in from six yards out by Eoin Doyle.

Ipswich’s lead was restored with Skuse’s strike, but how Cardiff did not equalise again just before half-time only Fabio Da Silva, formerly of Manchester United, knows.

Joe Mason beat his man on the left and got to the byline before sending a low ball all the way through to the completely unmarked Fabio at the back post who was only three yards out but skewed his shot back across goal and wide.

The home side came close to extending their lead in the second half. On 49 minutes Cardiff’s Joe Ralls slipped in his own half allowing Jonathan Parr to steal the ball and cross to Daryl Murphy whose powerful header was tipped over by Marshall.

Then in the 76th minute Tommy Smith was denied by another superb Marshall save and Berra sent the rebound on to the bar.

But in stoppage time they finally added a third. Skuse had a chance to shoot from the edge of the box and the Portman Road crowd were urging him to, but the midfielder passed to Murphy instead and the striker poked in.

Promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town earned breathing space in the playoff spots by beating Cardiff City 3-1 at Portman Road.

It was the ideal start for the home side as a long ball forward managed to beat the Cardiff defence, allowing Freddie Sears to sprint clear before beating David Marshall with a deflected effort to continue his fine run in front of goal.

However, the visitors were back on level terms just five minutes later as Scott Malone used space on the wing to deliver an inviting cross for Eoin Doyle, who headed home from close range.

Ipswich continued to apply pressure after being pegged back, but they had to wait until Cole Skuse produced a moment of magic to regain the lead as the midfielder scored his first goal for the club with a stunning effort from 25 yards.

After missing a good chance to extend the lead when Tommy Smith headed over, Mick McCarthy's side were given a scare just before the break when Fabio somehow managed to miss the target from a few yards out after being found by Joe Mason.

Superb goalkeeping prevented Ipswich from adding a third early in the second half as Daryl Murphy found the space direct a firm header at goal, only to see Marshall get a vital hand to the ball.

It was scrappy for much of the second half, but Ipswich looked the more threatening of the two sides and a second Cardiff equaliser never appeared to be on the cards.

Despite looking vulnerable to the counter-attack, the home side continued to put the pressure on and they were agonisingly close to another goal when Christophe Berra struck the crossbar after Marshall had denied Smith.

Cardiff should have earned a point late on when Craig Noone worked his way into space before picking out Aron Gunnarsson, but the Icelandic midfielder poked his effort wide.

That miss proved to be crucial as Ipswich wrapped up the win in stoppage time when Skuse played in Murphy, who kept his composure to find the bottom corner.
