Down 48,000 in 2014 to just over a million passengers. What a f*cking waste of our money

With the new routes I can see it being better

Went through there a couple of weeks ago. It was excellent.
If the could just sort links into cardiff it would be superb.
'Just' sort the links is easy to type though.

Our national airport isn't going to repair itself over night, it's going to be a 10/20 year job to get figures back to where they once were. Sadly, dispite the figures, the Welsh Economic Recovery is taking longer than the United Kingdoms recovery. And that will always have a detrimental impact on the airports use.
Wed Apr 08, 2015 6:49 pm
Not surprised as lost several routes last year so not surprised numbers down, wait see if that makes a difference the new routes? Thought you might be all over this?
Wed Apr 08, 2015 7:44 pm
It's pants, not enough routes and too expensive, sooner go bristol I'm afraid
Wed Apr 08, 2015 8:44 pm
It would be interesting to know what the initial bookings are like for the new Flybe flights - not sure if that's available info. These are very important for the airport - not ideal as not a true low cost airline but a good opportunity to boost numbers and show there is a market out there.
Anyone booked with them?
Wed Apr 08, 2015 9:16 pm
I've flown from loads of airports in the UK and still love flying from Cardiff.....mainly because its so relaxed. Its just a shame you have to fly from Bristol to save hundreds on the same holiday.
Wed Apr 08, 2015 9:18 pm
99 times out of 100 bristol is cheaper.fact

So bearing in mind that so far its not far off £100 million of taxpayers money already ploughed into this project and you are willing to fund more into it for another 10/20 years before it makes any profit..? With that type of financial management no wonder the Tories have the ONLY creditable economic plan in this election

Im flying from cardiff end of july with vueling to majorca. That was the cheapest flight i could get. Bristol. Bournemouth. East midlands And birmingham were all dearer

Can you furnish where 100m as been spent? I know you're including the 56m cost of purchasing airport in that! Like to know where 40m or so as been spent?
Slightly miss leading if including purchase cost
Thu Apr 09, 2015 9:13 am
If you read again I did say not far off.
Paid £52 million for it.
Further marketing funding of £13 million
Operating costs: ?
Which all added together wouldn't be far off £100 million of taxpayers money already

Even if the projected figures are right who's to say that without WAGs intervention we'd even have a viable airport now ? The airport was clearly on a rapid downward spiral and if we want to generate Cardiff/South Wales as any sort of economic centre then we simply have to have an airport.
The Tories idea was just to let the airport owners get on with it resulting, in all likelihood, in it withering on the vine. I'm not always in favour of government intervention in this type of thing but in this instance I don't see there was much choice, whatever the cost.
If the new routes and FlyBe's increased involvement results in the airport getting back to where it was previously it will be money well spent in my view, even if we sell on for a loss the net gain to the economy over future years has to be worth it.
As for the prices from Cardiff, the more routes and passengers the more competitive they can be. At the moment I would never choose to fly from Cardiff over Bristol, or even Heathrow, but I really believe that there are signs that could happen over the next couple of years and Bristol, I know, are already concerned about the possible impact.

other factors which the WAG could help with which would help south wales as a whole (and the airport) and are drastically needed are
- international conference centre
- Multi purpose 10,000 seat arena
- city centre transport system (i.e. trams/cable cars)
feel free to add some more (M4 relief road ongoing......)

Agree with all that.
It was vital that the airport survived, subsidised or not, but it has to be part of a much bigger picture to increase communication links.
To be fair, there are already plans to address the M4 link road and Cardiff City Centre transport so things are certainly looking rosey for the Capital !!

Simple salution to all you moaners about airport ! Close the fck ing thing down! then watch you winge in a thew years time when Bristol gets more expensive as no competition! And then say why havnt we got airport in cardiff!?

If there were more flights from Cardiff to more destinations and costs were reasonable the Airport would do well. It always used to in the seventies.

What's your problem with Cardiff Airport ???
We all know it went downhill but the WA are trying to do something about it, and we all know it has started the improvements, and that it will take time.

You keep banging on about this one Tory Boy. It's going to turn the corner soon and perhaps you'll admit you were wrong. Wish you and your sort would stop with this Wales bashing stuff.

Just been away for a few days on business and flew in and out of Bristol!
Tried Cardiff, but prices very high and schedule simply didn't meet my requirements!
Massive shame IMHO, as South East Wales potentially has a little diamond down at Rhoose!

Went to Belfast from Cardiff last week ,ok but compared to Belfast City Airport it was like a ghost town once our flight and one to Amsterdam were gone that was it for 3 hours.
Not enough routes and need a road link say off M4 ,I d like to use it more ,BUT

Went to alicante a month or so ago.
put us in that area just before boarding, for an entire fkin hour.
Total shit.
Their excuse was that 'a' disabled passenger had to get on. Fair enough, no one minds being put out of the way. But a international airport cannot organize boarding for a disabled person, for what should be a piss easy route to alicante is an hour late.
And, the bacon sandwich in departures was diabolical.
And, we our bags took an hour to go around the carousel on the return Journey.
An hour is being very, very fair To them. Im sure it was more.

Funny i went to Caribbean from cdf and my partner was disabled ! It was as smooth an experience as we have had in any airport in uk and have used most! And no one waited to get on board, We all can have bad experiences at some time doesnt mean it happens everytime!
likd i said people will complain if it dissappears!

Ye, Im sure most times it is fine.
I dont mind waiting, not at all. The organisation that day was the worst ive ever seen
due to the earlier delay to get people on, the plane was so late that when a wheel chair passenger that was late arrived when everyone was pretty much on board, they had to be carried up the stairs to the plane by a steward ( im really not lieing ). Her wheelchair came up after she had been dragged up. The poor women was sweating buckets by the top and the steward.

The independent preferred Sevenside airport was always the right option and it would have made a business statement about the future for the area. This will NEVER get back to the passenger levels they once had.
Going back to Miami in December so just had a quick look at prices. Low and behold if I flew from Cardiff it's an extra £150 per person and that's with two changes!!! RIP off
