" The Russell Slade Cardiff City press conference transcript: I have assurances I'm in charge next season but fans are entitled to opinion "

By Steve Tucker

Monday 6th April 2015

Following the shambolic collapse against Bolton, Cardiff City manager Russell Slade faced a difficult press conference. Here is how it unfolded...

Before kick-off the club rubbished reports in Portugal that Bruno Ribeiro was coming in as manager. Is that disconcerting for you?

You are always going to get speculation. Whether it’s in regard to players coming or going or managers coming or going. That is just the way it is in football. You just have to get on with the job. If you believe nine tenths of what you see then that is an individual choice.

Have you been given any indication where those reports came from?

I don’t know, but the source seems to be from Portugal. I have no idea how they came about.

Have you been given assurances you will be in charge next season?

Yes, I have. There’s a lot of confidence in what we are trying to do. We are trying to build something here. But today is a bad day at the office.

One fan at the end had a ‘Slade Out’ banner. Does that hurt?

Obviously you want your fans to be behind the football club. That’s important. You want everyone pulling in the same direction. I can’t control that though, people are entitled to their opinion and sometimes this job is a difficult one.

All I would say about that is that when you are regrouping and restructuring you are going to have your ups and downs. This game is one of those down days.

On the back of four really good performances by and large it is disappointing. What we need to do is respond to that as a group and as a football club bounce back. It’s all about responding now. We can’t control it now.

It’s happened, we are disappointed of course, and it’s a blow because we wanted to finish the season in good style and we still can. It’s all about recovering and preparing ourselves and dusting ourselves down and going again.

How can you win fans over?

I want to see good performances too, but it is a process. It’s not going to happen just like that. There will be ups and downs. I said we are improving and I believe we are improving. This game though was a bitter disappointment.

In the last month results have picked up so that must make this defeat by Bolton even more disappointing?

It was a huge disappointment because there have not been many over recent weeks. Even in the first-half most of us did not see that coming. They were ruthless in the way they took their chances. Certainly when we had those windows of opportunity we were not ruthless. In terms of having a solid structure to play off defensively, we let that go, That’s not been out hall mark over recent games where we have been resilient and difficult to beat.

Do you need finishers like Gudjohnsen to get out of this division?

They do have a wealth of experience. Their finishing was clinical and here that proved to be the difference.

Would things have been different if you had has Kenwyne Jones?

You could say that because we were getting balls into the box and some with quality and some without quality. We are missing one or two of our possible players at the moment. With Macheda being out and Revell limping off too.

We’ve lost Kenwyne as well. Joe Mason is coming back, but he is going to take time. It was not in the script to put him on after 38 minutes. It could be difficult without our top-scorer, but we managed to get a good goal at Reading. There are others capable of scoring, there’s no doubt about that. Hopefully we will have McAleny back in contention for Leeds on Saturday.

We were disappointed with the goals we conceded too. We left ourselves very open. But we created too and we really should have helped ourselves to a few goals.

Can you still finish in the top ten?

Yes, I believe we can. We are disappointed today, but the feeling in the dressing room of late has been very good. Training has been very positive.

We’ve had some good results but against Bolton we were below par in that second-half and we are disappointed by that.

That's not progress.

If Slade thought that our previous 4 performances were good, I can't see us going far under him. They may have been improved performances, but in my opinion they were quite a long way from being what I consider to be good.

As a football fan you are always to lose some games, however being thumped 0-3 at home is not something you just put down as a bad day at the office!

Think it says it all when the players going out on loan are doing better at the other clubs shows slade can't manage/motivate players at this level he is out of his depth and the longer the club take to realise this the worse position we will find ourselves in. I'm not one usually for calling for managers to be sacked but for the sake of the club slade has got to go

We are in regression. There has not been a hint of progress since RS arrived. Thanks to VT, & his "management team", our club is rapidly deteriorating at a rate that is escalating by the day!
