Cardiff City linked with shock move for Portuguese manager Bruno Ribeiro

5 April 2015

Votiria Setubal boss 'coveted by Cardiff' according to reports in Portuguese media, amid claims Jose Mourinho has recommended him

Cardiff City are being linked with a move to bring in Vitória Setúbal boss Bruno Ribeiro this summer, according to reports in the Portuguese Press.

Media websites in Portugal claim the Bluebirds have already contacted 39-year-old Ribeiro.

He is reportedly interested in the job, but keen to focus at the moment on keeping Vitória Setúbal in the Portuguese top-flight.

The reports claim Ribeiro, who knows British football well after playing spells at Leeds and Sheffield United, has apparently been recommended to Cardiff by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

The two men each come from the Portuguese city of Setúbal and have previously worked together.

Portuguese newspaper ABola headlines a story ‘Ribeiro coveted by Cardiff’, while Mais Futbol states ‘Cardiff want Ribeiro as coach’.

According to the reports Ribeiro, who is out of contract at his current club this summer, has asked for time to think about a potential move to Cardiff.

The Portugese media claim Ribeiro is on Cardiff's radar

However, it is said he has instructed his agent to keep in contact with the Bluebirds over the situation and plans to make up his mind next month.

Vitória Setúbal are two places outside the drop zone in the Portuguese top-flight with seven games left to go. They have a five point cushion over the bottom two.

Ribeiro is desperate to keep his home town club amongst the likes of Benfica and FC Porto in the Portuguese top flight and wants to focus entirely on that until the end of the season.

I can see it happening as Tan would listen to anything Mourinho tells him do u think it will happen?

I've been told Slade is here to stay and Tan is more than happy with him, especially the getting rid of players and reducing the wages.

Or was Slade just used for this?

It would be harsh if that's the case because i think Slade is better than that.

What's harsh about it? Slade will never get us or any other team for that matter promoted, if it's true that Mourinio rates him then that's good enough for me. If we are to make a push next season, then something needs to change, a new and fresh philosophy is needed on the coaching side. I have no problem with Slade being the link between the coach and the owner

I think it would be harsh to dispose Slade when he is starting to turn things around and should be given a proper chance and bringing this fella could end up upsetting the apple cart again like Ole and Mourinho also rated Velikonja and look what happened there.

Mourinho has the same agent as Velikonja, even a schoolboy would work that one out. But it must be fun for people like Mourinho touting rubbish players on the continent to naive owners like Tan. Fair play to them, that's football

If a new expensive manager came in and made the cuts Slade did fans would have wanted him out for being on such a big contract and how things panned out. It makes sense to have a fall guy to take the flack and then replace him with someone who can spend money and hopefully turn things around. Strip back and then spend accordingly. If Ribiero comes in he'll have a steadied ship to take over as opposed to the Titanic.

Please oh please let this be true! I dont care who this guy is. I'd take Sponge Bob over Slade any day. Anyone will do, even some crackhead off the street!

Not saying it is this guy who will replace RS but I do believe that VT will make someone pay for the extremely poor season ticket sales. With the standard of football that has been served up under RS surely if there is to be any hope of pulling back the lost ST sales then RS WILL be sacked.

Money talks in football and no matter what Nathan Blake thinks about giving RS needing 3 years to build a team I don't think VT will fancy funding the club whilst that experiment happens in front of thousands of empty seats at the CCS.

I don't know if this is the right guy to replace RS but anyone with an ounce of pedigree will be a massive improvement on RS, the question is whilst VT keeps sticking his nose into every decision involving the footballing side of the club WILL we ever be able to attract a manager with pedigree?

In my opinion the loss of £m's in season ticket sales WILL cost RS his job but in reality the pigs ear he has made of the job so far should have seen him gone in December.

It's not harsh, if you look at the reason why Slade was brought to the club in the first place. When he was brought in, all of us thought that Tan was still committed to bouncing straight back up, but to appoint a manager who had never got a team promoted seemed extremely strange. As it transpired, the actual policy had changed to that of getting all the big earners off the books, slash all wage bills and keep the team in the league and consolidate. Slade can and has undoubtedly achieved that. However, the next part of that plan must be to build a team for promotion that must play a winning and hopefully entertaining brand of football. Slade has never shown over two decades of management that he is capable of achieving that

Maybe Slade with go to a DOF role and riberio as a head coach. The club may be happy with Slade business wise and the fact he's kept us safe, but not happy with his style and the way it has effected sales etc.

I don't think that Slade was ever a long term appointment, remember at the time Cardiff wanted the Dundee manager who turned us down. They went for Slade because he was available and would carry out the orders without any fuss. Slade is obviously a nice, safe and balanced guy who understands the needs of the owner as well as the team. I just don't see him as having that extra 10% that all successful managers have, whether that's blind ambition, guile or tactical ability or probably all three. He may well make a better DOF, the way the club is set up, we probably do need one.

Agree with both your posts. For Me slade has done the job was brought in for, stabilise, clear out and reduce wage bill. If you like him of not he has achieved this, we are mid table. The platform and foundations albeit small ones haver been laid for a new guy to take things on and Slade to move upstairs
