The big Cardiff City debrief:

Conor McAleny earns Bluebirds a draw at Reading - it's a shame he's going back to Everton

Cardiff City came from behind to earn a draw at Reading thanks to a goal from Everton loanee Conor McAleny. As he rounds up the 1-1 draw Terry Phillips admits it;s a shame he's going back to Everton

The young Evertonian showed some great signs at the Madejski and our man Terry Phillips says he could develop into a top Premier League player.

With Kenwyne gone, how did Slade set up?
The big difference was a new-look front line after big target man Kenwyne Jones’ loan move to Bournemouth it was time to change things.

Federico Macheda and Alex Revell were both ruled out by injuries, while Joe Mason is only just regaining fitness after a serious hamstring injury.

Conor McAleny and Eoin Doyle joined forces, which meant Cardiff had to try and get the ball into feet more. They did try to get both players running by playing the ball over the top, but City need time to get used to a different style of playing.

They have to be far more patient when they don’t have a big man to aim for.

Kenwyne Jones celebrates his debut goal for Bournemouth at Ipswich
There were times when City built from the back and started to look capable of creating chances, but there is more work to be done.

Who were the stars of the show? :thumbright:
Aron Gunnarsson played in his usual warrior-like style. He’s intense, committed and powerful.

Gunnar wants to drive forward more in the remaining fixtures and when he did the difference was clear.

Reading weren’t able to stop the Icelandic international as he played a crucial part in the build-up to City’s equaliser.

Despite having some sleepless nights with his young baby, Aron Gunnarsson was all action at Reading
Bruno Manga, Fabio and Craig Noone were involved before Gunnarsson took the ball on, ran at Reading and picked out Conor McAleny, who struck his shot firmly into the corner.

Lee Peltier did well at right-back, while McAleny has the ability to score more goals this season.

Turning Point :thumbright:
Reading’s goal, scored after four minutes, was a key moment because the home team were able to relax and Cardiff seemed unable to do anything about it.

Reading were the better team for most of this match and created chances, but Cardiff stuck in and earned their reward.

But Pavel Pogrebnyak’s early goal was a major blow to the Bluebirds.

Who must do better? :ayatollah:
He lost his place in the team earlier this season because he can be poor defensively. He still struggles and was given a torrid time by Garath McCleary.

When Fabio allowed the ball to bounce he allowed Pavel Pogrebnyak to steal in and tuck his shot away.

That goal should have been prevented.

Another cause for concern :o
Joe Mason went on during the second half, taking over from Eoin Doyle as the main point of City’s attack. He ran, he chased, but scarcely got a touch.

He was able to get a touch twice and one of those was when he chested the ball down. Cardiff have to be clever in their build-up. It’s pointless having a player like Mason if he isn’t given a service he can use.

Let's end on a positive :thumbright: :thumbright:
Cardiff scored from their best move of the match, a passing combination which showed they have the ability to knock the ball around with style.

Manga, Fabio, Noone and Gunnarsson were involved before McAleny smashed his shot home first time from the edge of the penalty area.

McAleny has the ability to be a top player. The pity is that he will be returning to Everton next month.

I wonder if there's a possibility of a season long loan next year? Doubt if Everton will sell him.

He wants to be considered a 10 or second striker, well that's Ross Barclay's role.

I think this is a look see for us. Circa £500K would be great business. He is 23 at the start of next season.
