" Cardiff City boss Russell Slade praises 'resilient' Bluebirds as he puts Kenwyne Jones disappointment behind him "

Slade said he could see an improvement in his side and was pleased that results away from the Welsh capital had finally picked up

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade hailed the staying power of his side as they struck late to rescue a Championship point at Reading.

The Bluebirds fell behind within four minutes in Berkshire to a goal from Russian international Pavel Pogrebnyak, but earned a share of the spoils when Conor McAleny fired home in the 90th minute.

The result saw Cardiff move up to 13th and made it four games without defeat for Cardiff and no loss on the road now in their last six outings.

Slade said he could see an improvement in his side and was pleased that results away from the Welsh capital had finally picked up.

“It was a tight game all in all to be honest. There was not much in it throughout,” said the Cardiff boss.

“We started the game well enough, but our marking for the goal was disappointing. We allowed Reading to get ahead, but we grew into the game. We kept going the important thing was that we stayed in the game.

“We just want to keep the momentum going. We’ve not lost in four so we’ve got a bit of momentum and we want to finish the season strongly.

“Our form away has improved dramatically, although to be fair it could not have got much worse. The club had not won many away from home over 18 months. At some stage it had to pick up and fortunately it has. We look more resilient.

“But the frustrating thing for any manager at any club is inconsistency and we seem to have a bit more consistency in our play now which is pleasing.”

McAleny was brought into the side to partner Eoin Doyle up-front after the Bluebirds lost top-scorer Kenwyne Jones to Bournemouth on loan.

Slade said losing his main striker was not an ideal situation but that he had been left impressed with McAleny, particularly the manner in which the 22-year-old took his goal against the Royals.

“You don’t want to lose you top-scorer, but if we have to, now might be the best time to do it with us not going up or down,” added Slade.

“We had to set up differently. We were a bit more 4-4-1-1 with Conor in the hole so we could play to his strengths. His goal was certainly worth waiting for because it was a good one. I don’t think there are many players out there who could have taken it because he took it so early. He made it very difficult for the goalkeeper to get across.

“To be fair to Conor he does that in training at times. He does not need much of a back-lift. You punish people by taking things early and that’s what he did here.”

Once again he must have watched a different game to me.

I felt I'd gone all the way to Reading to see just two mazey runs from McAleny and then a goal in added time.

Nothing much to raise spirits apart from a fat guy in shorts who got a bit of jip from our supporters.

The result is an improvement from what it probably would have been 6 weeks ago.
