Turner damaged his ankle ligaments against the Royals in January and it was unclear if he would be able to play again this season

Centre-half Ben Turner could make a shock return to Cardiff City’s matchday squad for this Saturday’s clash with Reading.

The big defender has made fast progress over the last couple of weeks and manager Russell Slade says: “Ben has taken part in a couple of training sessions and with a couple more to go he has an outside chance.

“It has been good to see the progress he has made and we are confident he will be back playing Championship football before the end of this season.”

Slade’s medical team will put Turner through his paces in training sessions on Thursday and Friday before making a final assessment to see if he is ready to be involved.

Striker Joe Mason, too, could be included in the 18-man squad at Reading, while full-back Lee Peltier is fit again and looks likely to start at right-back.

The big shock, though, is that Turner is regaining fitness fast. He damaged ankle ligaments during the FA Cup tie against Reading in January, a tie the Royals won 2-1 on their way to a semi-final place against Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, April 18.

It was thought Turner would miss the rest of this season, but he has worked hard with the club’s medical team and shocked City coaches with his rate of progress.

Striker Mason, 23, hasn’t played for Cardiff for 14 months, while his last goal for the Bluebirds was during a 3-0 win against Blackburn Rovers at home during April 2013.

He was recalled from his loan spell at Bolton after suffering a serious hamstring injury and Cardiff manager Russell Slade is keen to see Mason in Bluebirds action between now and the end of this season.

Plymouth-born Mason, who joined Cardiff four years ago, has made played in two matches since being given the go-ahead to rejoin the first team squad for full training.

Both Mason and South African international Kagisho Dikgacoi, who has made only three first team appearances since his free transfer move from Crystal Palace, played 45 minutes for Cardiff in a development league match at Brentford.

They have also come through two half hour sessions during an internal training game.

Kagisho Dikgacoi played in a development league match recently

While Mason could even be among City’s subs in one or both of City’s matches this weekend - against Reading away and Bolton at home - Dikgacoi still has a fair bit of fitness work to get through before he is ready, but could be involved in one of all of the last three fixtures this season, against Millwall (home), Blackpool (home) and Nottingham Forest (away).

Federico Macheda and Alex Revell are both a little closer to playing again after being able to join in training this week, while full-back Lee Peltier and forward Conor McAleny are both fit and ready to play against Reading.

Anthony Pilkington is training again, but won’t be in the 18-man squad in either of this weekend’s matches.

Reading manager Steve Clarke strengthened his squad during the international break, signing Kwesi Appiah and Nathan Ake on loan from Crystal Palace and Chelsea respectively.

Striker Appiah adds extra option up front, though the 24-year-old has never played in the Championship. He netted eight goals in 23 games for Cambridge United earlier this season and impressed at the African Cup of Nations cup.

Clarke utilised his Chelsea connections again to land Ake on a month’s loan. The versatile 20-year-old has signed until April 22, giving Clarke cover at centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield.

He has played 11 times for Chelsea’s first team and was an unused substitute in the Capital One Cup final against Tottenham last month.

The Netherlands under-21 international covers exactly the same positions as Nathaniel Chalobah, who is expected back in training after suffering an injury during the FA Cup quarter-final win against Bradford.

I think we should try him in goal because he's massive!

Not sure he could score enough goals for a keeper though. :(

I honestly wouldn't put Turner back in the team but would be a benefit if he's on the bench and only bring him on if any of the back 4 get injured, I wouldn't change anything in the back 4 at this time, why disrupt something that's working. I have never liked hoofball and Turner says everything that hoofball would come back so no thank you, defensively he is solid but attacking it's just hoof it, horrible style

I would prefer Morrison to hoof it with the amount of times he gets caught on the ball or loses it with a sloppy pass, but defensively he's doing well so wouldn't change things either

I'd pick him any day over Morrison because at least Turner is prepared to get stuck in. I appreciate he's not that good on the ball but with his commitment I feel he makes up for his lack of ball skills. Morrison is not that good in the air, considering his height and gets muscled off the ball by smaller players.
