Cardiff City's new £12m Ninian Stand to be mothballed less than a year after opening

Season ticket sales have been poor for next term after a disappointing season, and Bluebirds chiefs have now decided the extension will be closed

Cardiff City's new stand is to be closed

Cardiff City’s new £12m Ninian stand extension is to be mothballed for next season, less than a year after being built.

Season ticket sales have been poor for next term after a disappointing Championship campaign, and Bluebirds chiefs have now decided the extension will be closed. Those fans who have already purchased seats in that area will be offered a move elsewhere.

The new stand increased capacity by 5,338 seats to almost 33,500, and work was finished in time for the Real Madrid v Sevilla Uefa Super Cup clash at the venue last August.

The project, which was given the green light in October 2013, was designed to capitalise on the club's new Premier League status. It was predicted the development would bring £31m to the local economy.

Crowds of 27,000-plus regularly attended matches during the doomed top-flight campaign, but those numbers have dropped to around 20,000 since relegation.

Cardiff City Stadium's new Ninian Stand

The most controversial aspect of the development was the new red seats which were installed prior to the club's return to blue, along with white seats forming three Ayatollahs.

A club statement said: “The Upper Ninian Stand will not be in use for the 2015-16 season.

“All season ticket holders who have already purchased seats in this area will be personally contacted to discuss moving seats.”

Annis, any idea how much City got for hosting the UEFA Super Cup Final?? :?

I'm pretty confident it wasn't £12m, but I thought that was one of the reasons Tan pushed it through?

In which case the net cost is £5m which is good business.
The stand is there ready for when we go up and an asset for the club for the next 100 years.
Although I didn't see anything in the accounts relating to money coming in for the stand.
Maybe in next years ? ( June 14 to May 15).

I'd put the family stand up there and then allow anyone to transfer to the grange.Could be an opening to get more people to renew.
Can't see the club doing it though.

Thanks, Annis

Suddenly makes a little more sense...and we wasted more than the difference on a certain striker! LOL

If only we'd survived that first season at the top, eh? ;)

Yes very true but at net cost of around 6m must be a bargain if you think how much a stand costs normally, don't forget our expansion was planned so cost even less than normal!

Let's be honest. It's not there for Championship footy. Its for promotion and internationals.

Seems to be value for money and will serve the national team well. Much better to get a 32k bear pit going for Wales instead of going from sell outs and back to 15k rattling around the Millennium.

To be honest though, if Wales carry on winning, the CCS will be too small. It will be full for the Belgium game and quite rightly should stay for that fixture, but in the interests of all Welsh sports fans, The Millennium Stadium is a better option and has the advantage of a roof to allow preparation to take place in a controlled environment.

In terms of value for money, you can't fault it!

The biggest shame is that the new stand isn't in regular use.

Who gave Cardiff City £6 million in grants to build a new stand? Was it the Malaysian tooth fairy?

Surely you don't believe that, do you?

As you say there is nothing in the accounts to suggest that any such grant was received. If it was it would have been accounted for in the same year as the expenditure was incurred.

Half of the cost of the stand extension was written off before it even opened.

One other strange thing about the 2014 accounts was the undue haste with which they were signed off ( by one of the Malaysian directors who take no active part in the club rather than one of the executive directors).Although they were not filed publicly until Feb 14 they were signed off in mid July 14 just 6 weeks after the year end. I have never seen football club accounts signed off so quickly as it gives little opportunity to take into account pot balance sheet events which would have to be disclosed.

My assumption as to why the haste is that either the club didn't want to disclose an event that they knew was happening shortly after or that audited accounts were needed for a potential new investor

Dave, Tan def did not pay for all this or shall I say CARDIFF City, we def received some sort of grant to cover part of it.
As to who it came from, I will find out.

That's interesting Keith.
The money from the Supercup would not have been identified before the accounts were signed off.
So that may genuinely be income to net off v the cost of the stand, but unless the club got the grant retrospectively then yes I can't see why it wouldn't have been accounted for.

Why the haste ?
Who knows?
Might be more to do with something going on in Tans wider business interests.

Annis, you're right, of course. But sadly, it will always be a case of "if's, but's and maybe's" and it's the unpredictability that keeps us coming back, I guess! :ayatollah:

And who told you in the first place that the club had received it?

Read it again fully Wez.The maximum grant is £750k per club but you have to deduct from that any grant already given since 1990.So the club is entitled to zero
