Twelve people were arrested in early morning raids to tackle football hooliganism.

Police carried out synchronised raids on homes of 10 Liverpool FC supporters officers believe to have been involved in a pub brawl after a Liverpool home game in December.

Nine males, three aged 17, two aged 18, two aged 19, a 22-year-old and a 25-year-old, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a woman on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

A 24-year-old man at a property on Lyme Cross Road in Huyton, was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and on suspicion of section 18 wounding after an Oldham Athletic fan was stabbed after a match at Anfield earlier this month.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply and a man was held on suspicion of possessing a prohibited article after what was believed to be a CS gas canister was found at his address.

The 24-year-old man being questioned on suspicion of violent disorder and Section 18 wounding has also now been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Chief Superintendent Jon Ward, area commander for north Liverpool, said the force was cracking down on football-related violence ahead of next Tuesday's derby.

He said: "We have seen disorder creeping into some fixtures and it is not going to be accepted.

"I am not going to use the term fans because these are not genuine football fans."

Police made arrests in Maghull, Bootle, Kirkby, Wallasey and Old Swan.

The arrests follow an incident in McHales bar on Lime Street after the Liverpool match against West Ham on December 7.

Chief superintendent Ward said the brawl had broken out between a group of Liverpool supporters and a group of Everton fans who had returned from a concert in Manchester.

He added: "What we do know is that the violence and trouble these people cause is organised and they get together intent on causing disorder.
