Improvement Through Better Understanding -Joe Ralls

Sunday 22nd March 2015

Young midfielder Joe Ralls has said a better understanding of what manager Russell Slade wants has helped the team to improve of late.

Speaking to the Official Site following another impressive performance from himself that drew further praise from assistant manager Scott Young, Ralls explaiend that the team understood their roles a lot better now and that was playing it's own part in our recent improvement in results following the two nil victory over Birmingham City this weekend.

Starting with the performance in the game itself, he admitted we were sluggish in the first half, but the players knew that, and were determined to put it right in the second period and we managed to do that with the opening goal.

'We were a little bit flat in the first half, but I think we picked it up second half and we deserved to win in the end. I think we moved the ball quicker in the second half and had a bit more intent. Eoin Doyle came on, got himself a goal, won us the penalty and was brilliant so that will do him the world of good. All in all it was a good win for us.'

Ralls goes on to say that with it being Doyle's first Cardiff goal, everyone was delighted for him because he had been working hard to make the step up since moving to us in the January window and he can consider himself rather unlucky to have not converted one of the other chances that has come his way in games so far.

'The boys are happy for him as well. He got his first goal and did brilliantly to get the penalty, which helped us see off the game in the end. He`ll be happy today for sure and hopefully that will kick him on for the final seven games and he`ll get a few more goals to take into next season.'

For himself, having now made 24 appearances so far this season, with a return of three goals, he was again pleased with his performance and he's been enjoying himself despite often being moved around the pitch to fill in so far this season.

'Personally, I was glad to get a full game and I am happy to play anywhere really. It was good to get on the ball and I enjoyed it today. The coaching staff and manager know that I like to play in the middle, but I am happy to do the inside left role or fill in at left back when needed. It`s nice to be on the pitch and playing in games.'

As for the improvement and the work on the training pitch, he went on to add that it wasn't just understanding Slade's desires, but it was also understanding each other more and that we were benefiting from partnerships developing.

'I think we are mixing the play up better now; this is a tough league and you can`t keep playing the same way. We use Kenwyne Jones and Alex Revell, who are threats for us aerially, but we are also playing more football now as well. Matt Kennedy did well when he came on and I think Fabio has been brilliant in the last couple of games since he has come in. He`s aggressive, gets his challenges in and has proven to be a winger`s nightmare. Today, he was at it again and was brilliant.'

Guessing Trollope is having a massive affect on the training ground.

And regarding Ralls, he's developing into a nice little player. With all the cost cutting going on, a team around Ralls, Doyle and Kennedy sounds good to be honest. Rather this type of player than £35k for Kenwynne!

Always liked Ralls and he is without doubt talented and must play , Coincidence that we have started playing differently since the arrival of Trollope?

I've always rated him and hope he keeps his place ahead of Gunnars. He can drive forward effectively and has a good shot. He is now a lot stronger. He keeps it simple when needs be and is learning from Whitts. The future definitely lies with the likes of Joe, Doyle and Kennedy.

Seems to have bulked up a bit.

I don't see him and Whitts working as a duo mind, it did work well Saturday but I felt that was more to do with Birmingham struggling in midfield throughout. Would like to see Ralls alongside another.

I don't know what wages Ralls and Whitts are on but I bet the gap between there wage is bigger than the quality difference.
