' 2022 World Cup Final '

Thu Mar 19, 2015 6:16 pm

The 2022 World Cup final will be played a week before Christmas after Fifa ratified the historic switch of the tournament to the winter.

The start date of the tournament was unclear on Thursday but Fifa has already suggested it would be a week-and-a-half shorter than usual.

That would mean it beginning around Nov 21.

The decision to move the World Cup was taken more than four years after the most controversial award of a sporting event in history, one plagued by allegations of bribery and corruption.

Qatar’s shock victory in the race for the 2022 tournament was achieved in defiance of warnings about the extreme summer temperatures in the country, which can exceed 50 degrees.

I actually live here in Qatar, it's interesting to hear it being discussed from this side.

Main concerns aren't about the stadiums being ready, money is being thrown at that. It's more so the general infrastucture. Roads are dreadful, there is insufficient accomodation - most hotels being built cater towards the 4*/5* luxury crowd not your average travelling football fan. And of course, how they will regulate people being drunk in public, which is a crime here.

It's a great place to live as a western expat. Plenty to do, rapidly developing and reasonable prices on most attractions and ameneties. Loads of free time, no crime, and superb money.

Not for everyone, but not as bad as many might think.

I still think it's a bad choice for the WC though, no matter how it was 'won'.
