Matt Connolly GONE to Watford

What an awful decision

Cardiff City defender Matt Connolly joins Watford in shock loan move

Thurs March 2015

By Chris Wathan

Defender Connolly is the latest Cardiff player to leave the club on loan despite figuring in recent first-team matches

Matthew Connolly has made a shock loan move to Watford – just days after starting for the Bluebirds in Championship action.

Connolly, part of the promotion-winning side under Malky Mackay, had been a regular under Russell Slade and featured for Cardiff in Tuesday night’s draw with Bournemouth.

Yet he has been allowed to leave South Wales to join Championship rivals Watford on loan until the end of the season.

Primarily a centre-back, Connolly has operated at right-back and made 26 appearances this year having originally signed for the club from QPR in a £500,000 deal in 2012.

The 27-year-old made it a hat-trick of Premier League promotions at Cardiff City Stadium having also gone up with QPR and Reading.

The move to the promotion-chasers will shock Cardiff fans given his first-team status, Slade having overseen the exit of a number of stars since his appointment in October as part of what has been described as a need to slash the club’s wage budget.

Connolly, who had been expected to keep his place in the side for Saturday’s visit of Birmingham, has two years remaining on his Bluebirds deal.

A Cardiff City statement said: "We have accepted a loan offer for Matthew Connolly from Watford FC.

"Matthew will link up with the Hornets immediately, subject to international clearance. The emergency loan spell will run until June 1st 2015 inclusive.

"We wish Matthew the very best of luck during his time at Vicarage Road."

We were solid at the back as well! Let's hope this doesn't show how week and susceptible we are to loan moves and open the flood gates!

Gavin,
He's not one of the high paid players.

good for him to be involved in a promotion push, maybe the second team was good enough to get promoted after all :laughing6:

Four full backs
Two centre backs and Gabbidon

Joke.

Is this a jok? We've now got two center backs fit and Gabbidon as back up. He's our most versatile defender and although he's not top class he steps in at any position and does a good job. Baffled me this.

And they wondering why season tickets are slow

I think MC is out of contract in the summer so he would have been leaving anyway, but if anyone had any doubt that each and every player at the club is for sale then the timing of this should end that.

So does this mean Barnum Bobb is in line for a call up on Saturday.

"Does a good job"?

Did you see his performance in the cup against Bournemouth? It was embarrassing for both him and the club.

Go now or at end season doesn't actually matter does it? After all someone has said more cost cutting next season so no problem with this one! :old:

A shocking decision, Connolly has ALWAYS given 100 per cent for us win or lose, a big heart, mental strength, these are the type of players that win you promotion, i definitely won't be renewing my season ticket now. It's about time that the Club came clean as to just what is going on. In fact after this decision i just might do something else on saturday, truly shocking.

YES! Great decision in my opinion. He has been a huge liability this season and we have better.

That's a good decision, he is an average defender at best and arguably we have better than him at our club anyway

One of our best players this season. He has been very consistent and I am totally shocked by this crazy decision. If this is an indication of the way we're going, then we have abandoned our ambitions completely. Nine players injured and Peltier doubtful. Gabbidon the only cover at centreback! Prepare for Vinnie' s Summer Sale...flogging off the rest of the bloody assets.

Or me Allan the thing is when people who are playing weekly or who had been in alfs case and now Connolly it becomes obvious there wanted out the club asap. If it was somebody in the stands I would get it but the club are doing anything to get the way bill down which dint bother me one bit. For some its all about the players or what league we are in. Look at Bournemouth the other night there probably run off more or less the same as are DVP WAGE BILL :laughing6:

Don't matter how you rate him the club are selling what they can and getting them off the wage bill. Such is life

Saleable assets about 5/ 6 maybe? Could be worse like selling all 1st team squad!

Another reason to moan !!!!!

We ain't paying big bucks for back ups. They all have to go before we can plan for the next phase.

I like Connelly but he has never been a first teamer.

8 games to go PLAY THE KIDS !!!!
