The world is changing.....Pubs being replaced by coffee shops.....

I don't really get it, but rarely do pubs and never coffee shops.

It's a very hard trade fella, I know as I've been in the trade for over 25 years. It's been a cut throat industry ever since the likes of Wetherspoons and Varsity came on the scene and before that, and imo the start of the decline, when supermarkets were allowed to sell alcohol.

Smoking Ban.

Yes that has had an affect but not as much as people think

The problem with many pubs is that they are owned by companies like punch taverns who rent out the pubs and force landlords to pay high rents, which force them to charge high prices for beer and food. Many brewarys own most of the other pubs and their landlords not only pay rents but are forced to buy their drink from that brewery at a set price, when they could buy it on the open market at at least 20% cheaper. The smoking ban has not had that much effect as people think and most pubs need to be doing food and be more people and family friendly these days if they want to turn a profit.
The problem with many pubs in granetown, riverside and canton is the local people who have moved into those area's in the last 20 years are not the type of people who use pubs.

This is very true too.

Since the smoking ban over 700 pubs have closed in the Greater London area alone. Other factors do, I agree, come into play but surely a figure such as this cannot be merely a coincidence.

28 Pubs and clubs were closing every week before the smoking ban. The average since the smoking ban is around 28 so its not gone up. As well as that many pubs have opened, Wetherspoons, love them or hate them have opened many, marstons have opened pubs which are primarily resteraunts like the one outside the stadium and many micro brewaries have taken over pubs or turned shops into pubs, the Rhymney brewery for example has 3 pubs, one in Merthyr one in Pontypridd (the wonky bar) and one in Cardiff.

I think the days of a "local" are numbered. Only town centre pubs or big chain pubs will be in existence soon

You've hit the nail on the head with the brewery's charging landlords stupid money which means it's past onto the punter. The cheapest pint in the pubs around me is £3.45!!! When, for an extra couple of quid I could get an 8 pack from the local off licence or super market.

I thought it was the Duke of Clarence that is due to close , not The Corporation?

My local pub closed down over a year ago. It was as rough as they came and attracted village idiots like me. Well guys who use to be village idiots who as they have grown up have had enough it it. It has resulted in the up and coming village idiots staying away. They just simple did not like the look of taking their chances with us.

Anyway it closed down because there were not many of us left. A year later some guy and his family bought the place outright and has converted it into a pizza restaurant and bar. I've got to say it looks decent inside and the pizza are far superior than the ones served at Pizza Hut. Decided to give it a go again and was turned away as the place was packed. Total cultural shock it was.

just a sign of the times really:

- cheap supermarket alcohol
- changing demographics of society who don't drink alcohol
- peoples budgets are being squeezed

Certain Pubs and clubs in the Rhondda are the same, absolutely booming. Don't be too greedy on your prices, and the punters will still be there.

How can you consider Brains Smooth a great pint ? Pissy chemical froth like John Smiths which leaves you with a headache.
